As an Admissions Representative, I spend a lot of time travelling to high schools around Montana and the northwest. I really like to look up the high schools I will be visiting on the internet and find their addresses on map. It is very helpful in larger cities and the internet can even provide directions from one point to another. I also use the internet to find out about other colleges. We can learn a lot about what works to recruit students by looking at other sites.
The best advice I can probably give is information for students considering college. I recommend that all students have some computer experience when they come to college. If you don't have the skills when you come you will when you leave.
Western is small and has limited resources, the internet has really opened doors for our students when doing research papers. My degree is in communications technology and I have taken a lot of computers classes. Students interested in technology should start by asking for information from the school (you can even request this from the web). If the school holds an interest for the student we always encourage a campus visit. It is the best way for a student to see if they would be happy at the campus and to ask specific questions about degrees, classes and potential jobs that could come from the degrees.
For the 4-H Webmasters, I would encourage you to use the internet for college searches. You are the right age to start looking and it is really helpful. I have been using the internet to research graduate schools, get ideas for my wedding and all kinds of things. It is a great tool and one that seems to reach students today.
