Business Reports

Dear Roxie Curtis,

The importance of primary source materials is very great.  Without them we would never know anything for sure!  Primary source materials are materials like a photograph of John Bozeman.  A painting of John Bozeman would not be because it is not the real thing.  It would not be how we really looked.  Primary source materials have a big use and always will.

                                Sincerely,
                                Karenna

Country Bookshelf
By Cayley and Shelby

The coolest thing about Country Bookshelf is that they have 50,000 books.  They also sell cards, books on tape, and wooden bowls.  The most expensive thing there is the world atlas for $250.  The least expensive thing is a card for $2.25.  The most unusual things are the wooden bowls that are made locally.  What they sell the most of is a book on the New York Times Best Seller List called The Crealion.  The most famous person that has been seen in Country Bookshelf is Tom Brokaw, who has written a few books.  When I went to Country Bookshelf, all I wanted to do was stay and read forever.
The Country Bookshelf started in 1957 on S. Tracy.  It got its first name, White Chapel Books, because it started in a little white church at the end of town.  The only other owner before Mary Jane DiSanti, the current owner, was Margaret Kirk.  They only change Mary Jane has seen in the business is that it has grown.  When Country Bookshelf moved from the little white church the employees called upon friends and family to help move all the books.  It must have been fun.
Mary Jane DiSanti thinks that it is good that downtown is growing, but she thinks we need more stores that will attract more locals.  The biggest change was Penny’s moving.  Even though it didn’t affect her business, she was sad to see it go.  She located her business downtown because she loves it but she thinks it needs more parking and more local attractions.  She has never thought of moving even when a real estate office moved in where she thought it should be retail.  The mall has not affected her business.
When we worked downtown it was very fun.  First of all we took a tour of the store.  We were amazed at how many books there were.  Then we dusted for a while and read.  It was a very fun hour.

Chaparral
By Kyle  and Steve

Chaparral sells 300 printings and sculptures.  The most expensive pieces in the store are Robert Moore’s paintings.  The least expensive thing was the little brass dog.  The most unusual thing in the store is a big bronze bear in the backroom.  Chaparral’s best sellers are Josh Elliot’s paintings.  The people who shops there are tourists, Big Sky people, and Bozeman people who want to design their homes.  In their basement there are more paintings.  All of their paintings are
The history of this business is that Eleanor Roish and May Sullivan started it in 1992.  There have been no other owners.  The business has changed by expanding their art.  Chaparral isn’t located anywhere else.  So that’s the history of Chaparral.
Laura is the woman we interviewed; she is positive about the changes in downtown.  The community is getting more involved in art.  They chose the downtown location because they wanted to be in the heart of Bozeman.  Laura thinks the traffic is a problem in Bozeman.  Their business has not thought of moving.  Laura disagrees with the idea of having a parking garage downtown.  These are a few of Laura’s opinions.
Steve and I vacuumed, dusted, swept and polished.  I hauled paintings into a customer’s car and to the back room.

Leaf and Bean

By Kyle F. and Kaj

One of the cool things about the Leaf and Bean is that they don’t just sell coffee.  They sell tea, gift items, and breakfast treats.  One of the most expensive things they sell is a piece of artwork.  I’m not sure how expensive it is but otherwise coffee beans are the most expensive thing.  Probably the least expensive thing they sell is a mug with no coffee in it.  Kyle and I thought about this hole in the ceiling.  It must have been the most unusual thing.  By the look of it the items sold the most were tea and coffee.  I asked a question, “What do you sell the least here,” and Kyle said “The Christmas Blend,” because they only sell it when it is close to Christmas.  Another thing is that I saw was Steve, a regular customer that comes there every day.
Some of their history that I learned was that it started in 1977 by Nicole.  The business changed when the second Leaf and Bean started.  The Leaf and Bean started just across the street in downtown mall.  The name came from coffee and tea.  The other Leaf and Bean is located by the Gap.  I am not totally sure about this but the person who started the business might still be alive, since it started 29 years ago.
The manager told us about how she feels about the changes in Bozeman and she isn’t mad about them.  They are actually helping her business.  There aren’t many changes.  She mostly sees change in the customers.  She thinks that the customers buy more expensive things.  They chose downtown because the people that work there can stop for lunch.  But at the same time there isn’t enough parking.  They have run out of coffee bean
Kyle and I did different jobs.  Kyle did the hackey while I washed the windows.  After that we took out the trash and put napkins in and stuff.  I learned about the Leaf and Bean.

Berg Law Firm

By Emilie and Karenna

Some people believe that the Berg Law Firm is haunted, but on that day we found out it was.  It was said that over fifty years ago someone was said to be murdered in that very building, and on October 19th, 2006 we found out the truth.  It just so happened that we were refilling the soda in the refrigerator when we went to go and get the soda cans from the supply closet.  We heard a moaning, screeching, stomping sound.  As we looked towards the stairs there was nobody there and we were sure that was where the sound was coming from.  We knew this was going to be a long weird day.
The Berg Law Firm provides services that help people get out of trouble.  The service that The Berg Law Firm provides may be expensive or may cost very little.  It depends on how much trouble they are in.  A service that cost very little is the quitclamit real estate.  This service ranges around $50.  One of the services that they don’t handle often is criminal.  People who come into The Berg Law Firm are men and women and a few dogs “no kids please.”  As you have learned The Berg Law Firm has may services to offer.
The Berg Law Firm started in Bozeman, Montana by Ben Berg in the 1940s.  Other owners besides Ben Berg have been Mike Lily, Gig Tollogen, Rienne McClyea, John Glover, and Jeremy LeFeber.  Changes over the years have been computers, fax machines, and copy machines.  The business has never moved and is only located in Bozeman.  This building is 100 years old and the business is 66 years old.  The history in this building is amazing.
Changes people have seen are that businesses come and go.  Some associated problems with being downtown are the parking.  Some people are against adding another person to the firm.  As you can see the opinions at The Berg Law Firm are all different.

Universal Athletics
By Uri and Douglas

Universal Athletics sells under armor and shoes.  The most expensive thing they sell is a treadmill.  The most usual thing they sell is badminton gear.  The people that go there are usually 12-35.  They sell shoes the most.  They sell a lot of football stuff.  They don’t sell a lot of soccer stuff.
They started in 1971.  The business started in Bozeman.  Dich Harte and Larry Aashiem started the business.  They have twenty stockowners.  They are located in Butte, Billings, Great Falls, Missoula, Kalispell, Glamet, WY, and Salt Lake City, UT.  They never thought of moving.
The people that started the business are still alive.  The Bobcats shopped there.  No pro soccer players go there.  The people that work at the store like the changes in Bozeman.  They are getting customers too.  It was started in downtown, but they still like it.  We almost always steamed clothes.  You hang the clothes and use a weird tube thing.

The Root
By Sophie and Rylea

The Root is a fabulous clothing store for women.  They sell just about everything a girl would want.  They sell skirts, dresses, shoes, hats, jewelry, pants, shirts, and purses.  The most expensive thing in The Root is a pair of fabulous boots for $150.  The least expensive thing they sell is a key chain.  It was made by the brand Billabong for $2.99.  The Root has three very unusual things.  They are fake hair and hair dye.  The items The Root sells the most are pants and shirts, because that is what they mostly have in the store.  Girls and women from the age of 15-40 shop here.  The clothes that they sell come mostly from L.A., Las Vegas, Roxy, and Billabong.  The most sold shoe brands are Roxy and Dollhouse.  As you can see, The Root has fashion that you will love.
The Root was started at least 10 years ago by Camille Kostelecky in downtown Bozeman, MT.  There has never been another owner besides Camille.  Since The Root started it stopped having men’s clothing.  It has become trendier, and it was more classic.  Other store locations are Hawaii and Arizona.  A hazard for The Root is shoplifting which many people have done.  Also a famous person has been in there, but was unidentified.
Feeling about moving and changing have been taking lightly.  They located downtown because downtown is a strong place.  There are no problems with it for them.  The most liked clothing is skirts and shirts.  The Root is against remodeling.  Those are the opinions of The Root.
When we went to work at The Root we did a lot of work.  We folded clothes and put them away in the correct places.  We also cleaned windows and mirrors.  We went and talked to customers that were shopping.  We had a great experience at The Root.

Wild Joe’s
By Gabriel and Keevon

Wild Joe’s sells coffee, tea, and gifts.  The most expensive thing is a hand made chess set which cost fifty dollars.  The least expensive thing they sell is organic pop.  The most unusual things Wild Joe’s sells are purses that were made out of old tires and bowls made of telephone wire.  Wild Joe’s sells coffee and espresso the most.  The people that are famous are Michael Keaton and Henry Winkler.  Some of the types of coffee they sell are dark roast, medium roast, and espresso.  I like their hot chocolate.
Wild Joe’s started on February 2006.  The business started on Main Street, Montana.  The name, Wild, means organic and Joe’s means coffee.  Amy Gerharter started this business.  Amy is the only owner ever of Wild Joe’s.  There are not any other Wild Joe’s but it will expand.  It used to be Harley Davidson shop and Montana Motor Supply.  Wild Joe’s have had shop lifting before.  This is what it’s been like in Wild Joe’s.
Amy feels great about the changes in the business but she is still working on improving.  Amy has changed Wild Joe’s by painting and rearranging things.  She chose to be located downtown because there is a lot of people and traffic.  She said the problem being downtown is the expensive rent.  She never plans to move.  Amy isn’t opposed to being downtown.  The employees are happy working at Wild Joe’s.  Amy Geharter’s favorite thing on the menu is espresso and a Macchiato.
Our work experience was fun with Amy Geharter.  First we cleaned tables then we got to make some coffee for people.  Then she gave us a tour of Wild Joe’s.  Last we delivered 10 cups of coffee downtown.  It was fun working at Wild Joe’s.

Burger Bob’s
By Theo and Sam

Burger Bob’s sells delicious, scrumptious, mouth-watering burgers.  If you want something expensive you should try Capn’ Bob’s Seafood Sampler, but if you want something cheap, you should try the Kid’s Hot Dog.  If you’re an exotic person, the Cardiac Burger is for you.  Do you want the original?  Try the Original Bob.  Most likely if you want to eat here you shouldn’t be a vegetarian.  You could be served by one of twenty-one employees.  Burger Bob’s is a great place to eat!
Now let me tell you about the amazing history of Burger Bob’s.  Burger Bob’s started making their delicious burgers 12 years ago.  Burger Bob’s has never moved.  The business was named after the owner, Bob Flecher and there have been no other owners.  The business hasn’t really changed.  Burger Bob’s has no other locations.  The manager, Chuck, has worked for ten years.  Here are some opinions of some employees.  The staff likes the changes in downtown Bozeman.  The changes helps Burger Bob’s because they get more people.  More businesses that sell food have moved to downtown.  So the competition level has risen.  But all in all they love their food.
The work experience that we had was great!  We cleaned tables.  We decorated menus.  We filled food containers and we toured the kitchens.  We had a great time!!!

Cactus Records
By Gunnar and Sonny

Cactus Records sells all kinds of stuff, even some $500 record players.  The least they sell are some 10-cent candies.  There is something that is really weird called the Redneck Nag Horn.  The best seller is toilet paper with Bush’s face on it.  Everyone shops there.  They disliked the proposals of no parking lot.  That’s an abridged description of Cactus.
Now the history of Cactus.  It started in 1972 at a gas station on Babcock and Willson.  They chose the name because they liked it.  The person I interviewed couldn’t remember who the founder was.  The other owner was Barben Gunnar and Bueno owns it now.  It has changed a lot.  There is less music and more other.  This is the only spot it is located.  So be happy you have it, if the mall ran out of business, they said would help their sales.  They never want to move.  So they will be there for a while.
These are their opinions.  They don’t like changes downtown Bozeman.  They have seen business going down and that affects them because less people are there.  That’s why they chose to be there where lots of people are.  A problem though is that there is no parking.  They have never thought of moving.  They’re tearing down the armory and they don’t like it.  They make $4,300-$1,600 a day!  Ryan, the person I interviewed, likes his job very much.  Those are pretty much my opinions too.
Our work experience.  We did overstock which is finding copies of CDs that were bought.  Sarah, an employee, took us on a tour.  They have a secret tunnel in the basement behind the counter.  She showed us how to shrink-wrap.  We found our all that they sell and if you’re looking for toys, pins, CDs, records, and candy you know where to go.

Miss Zula’s
By Courtney and Paige

Miss Zula’s sells gorgeous things for women!  They sell jewelry, clothes, accessories, candles, soaps, and books.  The jewelry there is made of all different kinds of material: gold, silver, copper, brown, etc.  The places they jewelry comes from are Paris, Germany, London, and many other places.  The clothes were unbelievable.  They were made in all kinds of colors like black, gold, silver, brown, and a lot of other colors.  The books we saw were based on family and women.  All the soaps had their own unique scent!  Each accessory had it’s own way of saying “Buy me, buy me!!” especially the purses.  The purses were hanging on a rack that seemed like there was a big spotlight on them.  The purses are also the most expensive items.  The least expensive were the candles.  The most unusual thing was the cowgirl board game.  The board game sounded like fun.  The item they sell the most is the Boma jewelry.  No wonder it sells the most.  It’s beautiful.  The people who usually shop at Miss Zula’s are girls from 18-30 years old.  The most popular brand they carry are Boma and Kenzi.  This is our description of Miss Zula’s.
Miss Zula’s originally started in Missoula by Angela Kenyon.  The name Miss Zula’s comes from the town, Missoula.  In 2002 Miss Zula’s opened up a new wonderful store in Bozeman.  Within that time there has never been another owner.  The manager of the Bozeman store has seen Henry Winkler in Miss Zula’s.  There is already a lot of history and there will be more to come.
In Miss Zula’s, people have opinions and these are the opinions.  Angie says, “I’m very excited!”  Angie’s number one change she’s seen is that we’re having more stores.  The thing that affected her business is the people.  There are a lot of people.  The main problem for her is parking, but that’s it!  She’s never thought of moving.  She always says, “Downtown is the BEST!”  Angela Kenyon is Angie’s boss and she thinks Miss Zula’s is perfect!  Angie doesn’t like the idea of a new parking place.  Her favorite parts about the store are the employees and uniqueness.  Her favorite part of being downtown is the people.  She thinks mostly everybody is nice.
Paige and I had a tour first.  Angie told and showed us everything.  Angie told us about lint brushes.  We used lint brushes on most of the jewelry stands.  All of the types of jewelry had it’s own special style.  There were beautiful earrings, divine bracelets, adoring necklaces and awesome rings.  As a gift we got gift cards.  The gift cards were five dollars.  This is our awesome story on Miss Zula’s!

Grey Fox Gallery
By Madi and Hannah

Hi!  Our names are Madi and Hannah.  Our class got jobs downtown.  My partner and I went to the Grey Fox art gallery.  If you like good deals come here!  They sell original art, frames, pottery, and prints.  You should know the most expensive painting is $60,000.  It’s just a painting of a moose!  The least expensive pieces are bookmarks that Richard’s daughter makes.  Normally kids wonder who shops here.  Well, we’ll tell you.  Moms, tourists, and even Bill Devine.  They sell mostly framing.  The most unusual thing they sell are metal flowers.  There are not many people who work here, only three people!  Richard doesn’t display his own art.  He displays his wife’s art.
The Grey Fox art gallery started in the 1970s.  The business started right here in Bozeman, Montana.  The name for his business started in 1993 as La Petite Gallery, which means little gallery in French.  Eleanor Crank started it.  Dean and Pam Coleman also owned the business.  Now there is bigger art.  The business is not located anywhere else.  It needs to grow.  The business has always been there.
Richard feels good about the changes downtown.  He hasn’t seen many problems.  He has problems with parking.  He has never thought of moving.  Richard gets bothered by them saying he landlord might move.  Richard likes his business because it’s fun.
Working at the Grey Fox art gallery.  We made our own framed work.  First we picked out a picture and a frame, and then we cut them so they would fit each other.  Last we glued the pieces together and brought them back with us.  Richard and his wife are really nice and fun too.
