EDCI 450 Projects Weeks 9 to 15
- Work in the school with a technology coordinator- Brent's
project. Kaytlynne- you are reading about the Technology
Coordinator and exploring the labs and technology systems at two
schools in which you work (Longfellow and Whittier).
- Monitor the Instructional Computing Lab in order to learn the
types of problems users encounter and the types of problems that occur
in keeping a computer lab operating.
- Complete each week's project as described below.
- Create a web page that is a summary and reflection of your
learning (and what others need to know) each week. (Estimate one typed
page in length.) This
will be shared with others in this class. Kaytlynne, you might
also share links to some good resources suggested at the end of each
chapter- check some of them out.
- The web page should be put into your electronic
portfolio. Link EDCI 450 Educational Computing Management and
Application on st6.html in your Intasc folder on your electronic
portfolio. Create a new page for this coursework and put into your
INTASC folder. Revise
each week as you increase your understanding of the topics and add to
your page.
- This is the Jigsaw strategy in which each person does a
different piece of the project and shares learning--it saves time for
everyone and lets you share different experiences. In this way,
you both do not do the exact same thing, yet you can learn about
networking and the technology coordinator's job from different, yet
valuable, perspectives.
If you have questions about any of the topics below, ask each other or
ask Joan and we will share ideas.
Brent-
Begin reading in The School
Network Handbook. ISTE. (2002). I have placed it in the bottom
drawer of the desk in the lab- you can take it with you since you are
the only person using it.
If possible, before working with Greg Hamley at Monforton School, read
Chapter 1 Destinations on the Information Highway: Clients, Servers,
and Peripherals.
Then read
Chapter 2: Highway and Rules of the Road: Cables, Wireless Connections,
and Protocols.
Finally, read
Chapter 3: Traffic regulators: Network Interfaces, Hubs,
Switches, Bridges, Routers, and Firewalls.
You can jump around as you need, but please be prepared to talk
with Greg about network management and issues. You will also be talking
with Bill Freese about how the Instructional Computing Lab is set up.
After reading and working with Greg Hamley each week, write a one to
two page summary of what you learned and that which should be shared
with others. Kaytlynne will be reading and learning from your
sharing and experience while you will be reading and learning from her
experience. We will discuss if it would help for me to take both of
your learnings (summary/reflections) and put them in one place on this
website.
Kaytlynne-
Please begin reading The Technology
Coordinator's Handbook. ISTE. (2004). I have placed it in the
bottom drawer of the desk in the lab- you may take it with you since
you are the only person using it for awhile. If some of the
resources are excellent, please share them with us.
Also. when you are at Longfellow and Whittier Schools, talk to the
person in charge of the technology. Who helps teachers with
integration activities? Who does the basic maintenance and quick
fixes? How many computers are in the lab or in each
classroom? How does the school get new equipment? How are
teachers provided with professional development in technology?
Ask other questions from what you have learned in EDCI 489 about
technology use.
Turn in this report when you have it ready, but before the end of the
last week of the semester.
