1. The portfolio
- reflects
who
you are as a developing education professional.
- is a purposeful
collection of work
over time; it is a process.
- it can be a thread that
ties together
your entire teacher education experience.
- it is used as a means of evaluation of
your growth and competence in the Teacher
Education Program.
|
|
2. You want to show that you have observed, practiced
and mastered
real-world skills of teaching, observing, and assessing and that you
have thought about your related skills, dispositions, and abilities as
a teacher.
|
3. Questions to answer
- "How might your portfolio demonstrate
the teacher
you desire to be?"
- "What story do you want to tell with
your portfolio?"
|
4. Standards form the Conceptual
Framework, the foundation,
of your portfolio.
INTASC
(Interstate
New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium) for teachers and state
curriculum
standards
for K-12 students
- State standards are related to
your lesson
plans and activities that you plan. These can be used as evidence
of your readiness for actual classroom implementation.
- Your portfolio uses the INTASC
standards
as the framework upon which to demonstrate your skills and teacher
preparedness.
- The INTASC standards form the
theoretical foundation upon which your Teacher Education Program is
built. These standards explain the concepts, or beliefs, about
the skills, dispositions, and knowledge that new teachers should
possess upon completion of the Teacher Education Program at MSU.

- Conceptual Framework--INTASC Standards
-
The Conceptual Framework-- INTASC Standard pages have
three
components.
| 1. A reflective
statement
on each INTASC principle. |
"What
does this standard mean to you? How does this teaching standard
[principle]
affect your professionalism as a teacher? Why is this standard
[principle]
important? How does mastering/exhibiting this standard
[principle]
make you a skilled teacher? What experiences have you had that
have
influenced your interpretation of this standard [principle]?" (p.
52)
|
| 2. Rationale
for individual artifacts. |
Rationale
is a statement explaining the connections
between the artifacts and the INTASC principle. What is the
artifact?
Why is the artifact filed under this standard? What does the artifact
say about my growing competence? What are my strengths and
weaknesses? |
| 3. Performance
based on
artifacts. |
"...an
artifact is
tangible
evidence of knowledge that is gained, skills that are mastered, values
that
are clarified, or dispositions and attitudes that are characteristics
of
you." (p. 54)
Artifacts can be lesson plans you have created, tests, videos of your
teaching,
text, pictures, audio, podcasts, blogs, etc. Create a link to the
artifact or paste the artifact into the box at the bottom of the page.

As you
progress through the
Teacher Education Program, you will
add documentation to show how you have accomplished each of the 10
INTASC standards. EDCI 320 helps you provide documentation for
the teaching
with
technology component of Standard #6. Multicultural Education
helps you provide
documentation for Standard 3 on diversity, as is a component of
Children’s Literature. The Assessment course helps you provide
documentation for Standard 8 on assessment and evaluation.

6.
ASSESSMENT OF YOUR PORTFOLIO
Assessment will occur in several places during your Teacher Education
Program. It will identify areas
of
need and accomplishment to ensure learning and understanding of
teaching as a profession.
- During your methods courses, you will have an interview
with your
advisor to discuss your INTASC standards reflections and progress
towards documentation in your electronic portfolio. A portfolio that
shows little progress as a teacher may cause a hold on registration of
courses the following semester.
- During Professional Issues, after Student Teaching, you
will be required to exhibit your completed electronic portfolio and
demonstrate your accomplishment of each INTASC standard.
- Rubric for Evaluation of
the Electronic Portfolio.
