Super bowl and more!

Hey guys! Hope everything’s going good for you all! Things have been pretty good. Just starting to get into a routine with work and class so that is always nice. I’m starting to get back into the groove of a workout routine and I’m so excited! The new PE complex is open and it is absolutely amazing! It’s such a great upgrade/expansion to the past facility and I know that all of the students really appreciate it. My roommate and I are starting to go together in the mornings before class. I’m used to getting up at around 5 am to work out but Cassi isn’t feeling it…but she’ll get used to it, hopefully! Did u guys check out the Super Bowl?! That was such an amazing game! I went to a Super Bowl party at the Sigma Chi fraternity and just ate a ton of food while watching the Giants gratefully beat the Patriots! Sorry to all you Patriot fans…better luck next year. Now I’m a die-hard Cowboys fan but I just had to root for the underdog. Hope no one’s hearts were broken too bad. But look on the bright side, baseball starts soon! Oh yeah! Go Yankees!

Recruitment

Hey guys! Hope the transition back to school hasn’t been too rough on you! Classes are going pretty good and I think this semester might be pretty fun so here’s to crossing your fingers! Things have been pretty hectic with my sorority right now. We’re in the middle of spring recruitment and have parties almost every night. The parties are themed and have been pretty fun. One night we had a pizza making party with a slideshow and another night we all went to a men’s basketball game in our letter shirts to show support for the Bobcats. We have a few girls ready to pledge and become a part of Pi Beta Phi so we are all really excited! I’ve been trying to enjoy the snow right now…trying is the key word. You would think that growing up in Montana I would totally love the snow but sadly that is a big negative! Well I hope you all are staying warm and not getting stuck in the snow!

Back to School

Well it’s that time of year again. Time to move back into my sorority and make my way to the bookstore for yet another semester at Montana State. Surprisingly I couldn’t be happier to get back to school! I’m really excited about all of my classes and let’s just say my break wasn’t the best. The first day of break I was in a car accident! A guy rear ended me and ended up totaling my car! So I had to use a rental for a few weeks but luckily I have a new car and things are going a lot better! But back to school…I’m still working at the AskUs information desk and loving every minute of it! Granted I’m working more hours and taking 16 credits but I love to stay busy. I was also elected to the position of Vice President of Philanthropy for my sorority so I will be busy planning all of our community service events throughout the next two semesters. But one thing that has surprised me the most is all the snow! I seriously haven’t seen snow like this since I was a kid! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been stuck in my parking lot and had to get my sisters to push me out! Bridger and Big Sky have been getting amazing amounts of snow so that’s always good news for the skiers and snowboarders! Hope you all had a good break and enjoy the start of the new year!

Finals

Hey everyone! So the time has come…dead week and finals. Blah. This is the super exciting time of studying to the max! When the library is crammed full of studious..students(?) trying with all of their might to retain as much information from the past 14 weeks. For me the library is not my primary choice of study. I prefer to stay at home where we enforce quiet hours for about 18 hours a day. The only time for ‘loud’ activity is during lunch, dinner, and snack time. What is snack time? Well, every night during finals week our house mother, Eve, makes us snacks at 9 p.m. to give us a study break since most girls stay up way late. The snacks usually consist of her famous puppy chow, chocolate covered strawberries, and caramel corn along with mini French dip sandwiches, pot stickers, and a variety of fruits. This semester I lucked out and all I have for finals are to turn in two papers, one to my History 320 class and another to my EDCI 360 class. So this means that I will be done with my 5th semester as of Tuesday, I’m a little excited! But after that it’s time for packing. The only bad thing about living in a sorority house is that it closes during winter and summer break. This gives our house mother a chance to take a break and go back to Ireland to visit her family and our insurance does not cover us if she’s not there. Luckily for me, I found a place so that I can live in Bozeman over the break. A guy that I work with at AskUs (the campus information desk) is letting me rent his roommate’s room since he will be home over break. This way I still get to work on campus and get my back my other part time job at Victoria’s Secret. Good Luck with all of your finals and don’t stress too much!

Thanksgiving

Once again Thanksgiving has come and gone with me not doing any homework and eating way too much! Hope you all had a good break for a few days before heading back to school. This is the time that I get stressed out the most in college. You just get back from a few days off and realize that there’s only 3 weeks left of class; good and bad! Good because that means the semester is almost over. Bad because that means finals are coming up! Argh! But no need to worry, for me at least. All I had due were a few group projects and research papers, the joy of being a history major! So with most of my projects taken care of I have been using this time to finish out my intramurals of co-ed basketball with the boys of SAE and volleyball with some girls at my house. It has been busy Tuesday and Thursday nights but some much fun! I’ve also been grabbing a few extra shifts at the AskUs (campus information) desk to earn that ever needed money, especially with the holidays coming up! That’s one thing that I really love about working on campus. All of the jobs are super flexible with your class schedule and can help you out if you need extra hours or a few days off. Well I hope you guys didn’t eat too much turkey! Now back to studying!

Extracurricular Activities

Now we all know that going to college is all about getting a good education and expanding your horizons but what about the social aspect and extracurricular activities? Throughout my experience as a student at Montana State University I have discovered many outlets that are available to those who just want to have fun.

The nice thing about Bozeman is that it is such a college town and caters to that atmosphere by offering many things to do/attend locally. The Emerson Cultural Center offers many things such as tango and African drum lessons and art classes for those in the community. I have attended many riveting speakers and exhibits that they put on. Professors have used the Emerson as a way to get students out of the classroom by having them attend speakers and other events. The Emerson also plays host to the Tracy’s, the Media and Theater Arts awards gala modeled after the Oscars.

Another great place to go when classes have you stressed is to either of the two hot springs in the Gallatin Valley. If you’re not too keen on driving very far then Bozeman Hot Springs is the place to go. They are located in Four Corners, which is about a 15-minute drive. Bozeman Hot Springs has a ton of pools and also offers a weight facility so if you live out in that direction it makes exercise even more convenient. The other facility is Norris Hot Springs. This is about a 30-minute drive from Bozeman but the atmosphere is unbeatable! It is a very chill place that has one big outdoor pool and a rustic feel. In the winter the run from the locker room to the pool isn’t very fun but a few days a week they have a house bluegrass band perform and they are amazing! It’s a great way to get out of town and hang out with your friends.

Halfway

So here we are, about halfway through the semester and I’m so excited because only about 60 days till Christmas, but who’s counting? But seriously…this semester has actually been a really interesting one for me. Up until this year I was dead set on becoming a high school history teacher. That was my goal and I was going to achieve it, or so I thought. As of now I am taking two upper division education and history classes. Talk about a lot of reading! But there is one thing that I realized; I really do not have the drive to be a teacher anymore. I don’t know if this was an overnight thing or what, but it just doesn’t feel like the right path for me to take. Now don’t get me wrong, MSU has an amazing education program! The advisors work with you and help map out your classes for your entire college career, making sure you don’t miss out on anything important, which is a huge help. So I had this epiphany that I wasn’t made to be a teacher and instead I am going to focus on getting my history degree with a minor in religious studies and hopefully move on to law school. The beauty about Montana State is that they make is so easy to change majors, even mid-semester! I have had all the help I would need when transitioning from the College of Education/Health and Human Development into the College of Letters and Science where the history department is located. I just registered for classes for next semester and it is all going to work out pretty good. Granted I do have to take some lower level classes again due to major requirements but I’m not too worried about it. And even though I am still in two education classes I am enjoying them as well because they are helping me in my understanding of adolescents and giving me helpful tools that I can use out in the real world later on. So if you ever decide to change your major while in college just remember that you are not the only one and that it’s not as stressful and scary as you think! Until next time!

Homecoming

Hey everyone! Things are going pretty good here in Bozeman. I’ve been busy with midterms and watching the Bobcats play some amazing football at Bobcat Stadium! Homecoming was a few weeks ago with the theme being ‘Spirit, Traditions, and Memories’ and it was a ton of fun! There were activities on campus all week such as a BBQ, a blood drive put on by SAE fraternity and CW sorority, and an all campus hike to the famous ‘M’. That Saturday was met with a ton of snow but the Homecoming Parade continued like there wasn’t 2 inches of snow on the ground! Many groups and clubs on campus put together floats that represented the theme and many local businesses joined in as well. My sorority, PBF, built a float with the men of SC fraternity and had a great time! We all piled on to the float and rode through the parade despite the freezing temperature and giant snowflakes! After the parade I made my way over to the football game to cheer on the Bobcats. The game proved to be a tough one as the field was covered in mud. At halftime the Homecoming King and Queen were crowned and the Bobcats pulled out a narrow win over Southern Utah University, 7-3.

Along with play also comes work. I just finished up with my midterms and I could not be happier! I only had midterms in my two history classes but they are both upper division so that was not very fun. Needless to say, I fared pretty well and now I am test free until finals. But school isn’t the only thing that has kept me busy.

I was just recently awarded the position of Greek Ambassador Coordinator to the Greek Ambassadors here on campus. As a Greek Coordinator I will be helping out with the orientation sessions in the fall and at the MSU Fridays by giving house tours and presenting information about the Greek System here at Montana State. I’ve also started my devotion to intramurals. My team just finished up with co-ed softball, which we played with the men of PKA and now we are getting ready to play co-ed basketball with the men of SAE and also forming a volleyball team of the girls in my house. My chapter is also getting ready for our annual Fall Party. This is basically our own Halloween party that we have for the girls in the house and their dates. Each year we theme the party and this year our New Members chose the theme of ‘Saloon Girls and Cowboys.’ We are all scrambling for our costumes and dates but having a great time! As for our New Members, they will be going through initiation next weekend and all of the girls are really excited!

That is about all that is happening in my life right now so until next time…Go Cats!

Introduction

Hello to all! My name is Shyla Reed and I am a junior here at lovely Montana State. I am pursuing a double major in history and Spanish and I am very involved here on campus. I originate from right outside of Billings, MT in a little community called Huntley Project. Three years ago I traveled the full 150 miles to Bozeman and enrolled at MSU.

This has been on crazy and busy semester so far! I’ve been constantly running around between classes, working on Greek activities, and having fun at the AskUs desk here on campus. Right now almost all of my classes are upper division classes so I have a lot of work to do! Even though it is a lot of work, I do enjoy all of my classes. That is the nice part about upper division classes, you get to chose the classes you take based on your own interests. I am thoroughly enjoying my European Intellectual History and my U.S After 1940 classes. Both of my professors are well prepared and make all of the classes interesting as well as pay close attention to make sure that you are understanding as much as possible.

The Greek system just finished with its Fall Recruitment and my chapter is having a great time getting to know our new members. My sisters and I have been really busy with hosting Greek Week on campus and making a float for the Homecoming Parade with a fraternity. We have also been busy putting intramural teams together. Our softball season just ended and now we are gearing up for some 3 on 3 volleyball and basketball action! My chapter has a lot of philanthropy events coming up such as helping to rake leaves for families in town and planning a spaghetti feed for loyal Bobcat fans the night before the big Cat/Griz football game.

I am involved in other organizations on campus such as the AdvoCats. This is a group of motivated students who help the Admissions Office by giving campus tours and by writing letters and calling prospective students. I have found this to be a great way not only to get involved on campus but also a way to get to meet new and exciting people.

Hope you all have a great weekend and pray for snow!
