Become an MSU student in 5 easy steps
If you are unsure where to start or what to do next…
Get started with the Cat Check checklist!
Step 1
Apply for Admission

- Apply online at: https://apply.embark.com/ugrad/montanastate/
- OR Send your application for admission along with your $30 check non-refundable application fee. Make check or money order payable to Montana State University. Mail application form and fee to:

- Request that your official ACT or SAT test scores be sent directly to the Office of Admissions from the ACT (MSU school code is 2420) http://www.actstudent.org/scores/send/index.html or SAT (MSU school code is 4488) http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/sat/scores/sending.html testing company (required for freshman applicants).
- Request that your final, official high school be sent directly to the Office of Admissions from the high school (high school transcripts are not required for Transfer Students).
- Request that all of your final, official college transcript(s), Advanced Placement, and/or International Baccalaureate be sent directly to the Office of Admissions, if applicable.
- Before or after you have applied for admissions, MSU encourages you to visit the Montana State University campus or attend an MSU Friday (open to all students and family members).
- Check your acceptance letter for accuracy. Check your acceptance letter to determine exactly which transcripts, test results, etc. are necessary for your admission file, which must be completed by the 15th class day of the term you will be attending. Call us if your information needs to be updated.

Is your mailing address correct?
Is your email address still current?
Is your residency status correct?
Is your chosen major correct?
Please note your MSU Student ID number.
Please contact Admissions if you have questions regarding your application status or admission requirements, or if you have decided not to attend MSU.
- Once you have decided to attend MSU, submit the housing application (step 3), submit your Orientation materials and confirm your attendance (step 5) after registration for classes.
Step 2
Apply for Financial Aid

- Apply for need-based financial aid/student loans. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) priority deadline is March 1. MSU's FAFSA federal school code is 002532. The FAFSA form for federal aid can be accessed at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/.
- If you qualify, merit-based scholarships are automatically awarded to students entering the Fall term when you submit an Admission application and official ACT or SAT test scores have been received. For more information see http://www.montana.edu/admissions/scholarships.shtml.
- Inquire about College and Departmental New Freshman and Transfers Scholarships Applications within each MSU College and Department.
- If eligible, apply for VA educational benefits by contacting the Veteran's Affairs Office at (406) 994-3661 or at http://www.montana.edu/wwwres/veteran/.
Step 3
Apply for Student Housing

- Housing applications can be submitted online or can be downloaded and printed at http://www.montana.edu/campuslife/. If you do not know your MSU Student ID you can use your social security number.
- If you have less than 30 semester credits and will be attending Montana State as a full-time student, you are required to live in the residence halls, unless you are a single parent, a married student or complete the exemption process for another reason.
- Graduates, single parents, and married students can find out about Family and Graduate Housing opportunities at http://www.montana.edu/campuslife/ or (406) 994-3730.
Step 4
Submit Immunization Records

- Required Immunizations (Health History Form) and the Tuberculosis Screening Form can be printed at http://www.montana.edu/wwwhs/medserv/immunization.html.
- You must send proof of required immunizations and the Tuberculosis Screening Form to the MSU Student Health Service at least three weeks before your Orientation session or you will unable to register for classes until they have been received.
Step 5
Submit Orientation/Registration Materials

- Information on orientation/registration is sent after students are accepted for admission. Complete the registration card and mail back to the Orientation office.
- Attend New Student Orientation. Information and the session dates can be found at http://www.montana.edu/admissions/orientation/.
- Once you have attended Orientation and registered for classes you will need to confirm your attendance. Log into the MyInfo website to confirm your attendance.
