Performance Rating Distribution - FY98
Fiscal Year 1997-98

To be eligible for salary increases, tenured and tenure-track faculty must go through a formal performance evaluation with their department head or dean based on criteria established by the college or department. Regardless of the criteria or rating scheme established, each tenurable faculty member must be given one of the following overall performance ratings:

EP - Extraordinary Performance
EE - Exceeded Expectations
ME - Met Expectations
BE - Below Expectations
UP - Unsatisfactory Performance

Deans and department heads are encouraged to use +/- notation with these ratings when they feel such distinctions are appropriate. The rating is noted on a card submitted to the Provost's Office, and the faculty member signs the card to acknowledge that he or she has seen the rating.

The distribution of these ratings varies substantially among departments, and the Salary Review Committee believes that "grade inflation" is a problem in some areas, raising unrealistic expectations for promotion and tenure for some faculty. The committee makes percent distributions of performance ratings available to assist faculty in understanding where they stand relative to overall ratings in the university.
