Attendance at Trainings, Professional Development Courses/Seminars, and Wellness Activities
Auxiliary Services encourages professional development and participation in MSU Wellness activities for all employees. Efforts will be made to ensure Auxiliary employees are offered opportunities to attend events that are beneficial and relevant; and also to ensure that employee participation in said events will not cause undo stress on the operation as a whole.
Employees must seek prior approval from their supervisor to attend any professional development courses/seminars or Wellness activities (events) offered during their normal work schedule.Supervisors will determine the correct leave type to use (i.e. annual, sick, leave without pay/LWOP, or regular time) and make those adjustments to the time report. Coverage of work areas must be arranged and approved by supervisors prior to these events. Examples are:
- Sick time can be used for MSU sanctioned Wellness activities (i.e. health fairs, exams, tests etc. Does not include exercise or wellness classes.)
- Regular time can be used for in-house events offered by HR, ITC or other MSU departments during scheduled shifts.
- LWOP or Annual time can be used for MSU classes taken during work hours.
Can I adjust my schedule in lieu of taking LWOP or Annual time for an MSU class?
Employees who are eligible to take MSU classes must seek advance approval from their supervisor prior to adjusting their work schedule. Work schedules may be adjusted by adding the missing time at the beginning or end of a shift or during the lunch hour. Approval must be sought well in advance of the class start date. If coverage in a work area is needed, it must be arranged and approved by supervisors in advance. Because of requirements for coverage in critical areas of the operation, an adjusted work schedule may not be granted. in order to keep the operation running efficiently and to not cause strain on service provided, co-workers or costs to the department.
One hour during the workday can be taken off for a class by using annual leave or adding the missed time during the workday at the beginning or end of a shift or during the noon hour.
Reminder - Meals can only be consumed during lunch or break periods.
Auxiliary Services requires coverage in critical areas of the operation, leave or flex time may not be granted in order to keep the operation running efficiently. Should the workload be too heavy at certain times or should it increase unexpectedly, employees may be required to miss the event(s) in order to not negatively impact the operation during those times.
