Access...

We access the backcountry by foot and on skis. Bootpacking is ok when the snow is packed down (spring), or when there's no snow at all on the trail except for at the top of the mountain at higher elevations. When the snow is deep, postholing is not an option. Many people will access the backcountry with snowshoes, but using skins on the bottom of your skis (ski touring) is far easier and faster. Snowshoes are available to rent at the SOB barn on campus. Your mode of approach is up to you, but be ready to hike. The turns are worth it, so don't worry. We try to match up people on the same equipment so those on faster gear don't have to wait for the others.

Ski Mountaineering...
There are those in the club who enjoy trips that involve rock, ice, and severe terrain. Often, these trips last as long as 24 hours straight or multiple days, and are in very cold temperatures. If you are interested in this type of riding, we will try to put you in contact with others who are similarly motivated.

Local Areas...

Our members plan on getting out as long as conditions allow for safe travel in our desired terrain. Check out the current/archived avalanche conditions.
