Requirements...
This club is not for beginners! Expert riding ability is
required as well as strong physical condition. If you are
unsure of your ability, then getting some more practice at a
lift-served, controlled area is probably a good idea. We will
be hiking in deep snow with snowshoes or skinning from 3 to 5 miles
a day (one way) in addition to the terrain we plan to ride or ski.
It's a work out! A
Basic Avalanche Workshop and proof of attendance is required
before you will be allowed in the backcountry with members of the club. If you
do not attend at least the Basic Workshop or can not provide proof
of an equivalent education such as an Avi I course, then you will
not be allowed out with the club. Avi I is not required, but the
Basic Avalanche Seminar offered on campus is. This is strictly
enforced for the safety of our members. Thank you for understanding.
A signed
waiver for the club is also a requirement which can be found by
clicking on the waiver link.
You must be completely capable of riding a variety of
UNCONTROLLED terrain including, but not limited to the following:
- Slopes ranging from 30 to 50 degrees
- Steep powder
- Steep crust
- Corn snow
- Rocky areas
- Trees
- Chutes
The Following equipment is required and is not supplied by
the club:
- Beacon/transceiver
- Avalanche shovel
- Proper winter clothing
- Skins or snowshoes for uphill travel
- Probe (highly suggested)
- collapsible hiking poles
- Other avalanche gear you feel necessary (avilung)
- Other ski/snow board equipment
Some equipment may be rented at the
SOB barn.
