Identifying Parameters Critical to Ethanol Production from Montana Small Grains |
|
Project Description: |
| Finding alternative uses for wheat and barley is important to improve marketing opportunities for Montana growers. The primary goal of our proposed research addresses ways to enhance the value of small grains by identifying varieties with improved starch extraction and ethanol yield. Much is known about how corn varieties vary with respect to their usefulness in ethanol production. However, little to nothing is known about to what degree wheat and barley varieties vary in their usefulness for ethanol production. Ethanol yield is not necessarily correlated with starch content nor is choosing the best variety for ethanol production as simple as choosing the highest yielding variety. The primary goal will be to screen among current wheat and barley varieties to identify those with potential for use in ethanol production plants. The proposed objectives may allow ethanol plants to operate efficiently and economically in Montana using enhanced ethanol yield varieties. |
