Selection of Montana Varieties for Camelina sativa

Dr. Duane Johnson

Project Description:

Dr. Duane Johnson has established camelina breeding program at the MSU Northwestern Ag Research Center (Creston, MT) to select camelina varieties that are adapted to Montana and the Northern Great Plains.  Selection parameters include yield, oil content, oil composition and disease resistance. Over 70 accessions from the USDA and world collections of camelina have been evaluated. Two lines (MT-1 and MT-5) have been selected with increased oil yield relative to European camelina varieties (Ligena, Calena, and Celine) (Fig. 2). MT-5 contains nearly 40% oil, whereas the oil content of the European varieties ranges from 30-34%. The fatty acid profile is unaltered (Fig. 3). MT-5 contains higher levels of vitamin E (tocopherol) than the European varieties or MT-1.  Vitamin E is an anti-oxidant that prevents oxidation (rancidity) of the oil and is a desirable human nutrient.  MSU is applying for plant variety protection for MT-5 and MT-1.  Commercial seed will be available for distribution to producers in 2007 or 2008.
