Camelina sativa as an Anti-inflammatory Nutraceutical

Researchers Involved:

campbell
Dr. Christina Campbell

Project Description:

Dr. Campbell is evaluating potential health benefits of camelina consumption in humans. Specifically, she is evaluating the impact of w3 fatty acid supplementation from a novel plant source, Camelina sativa on inflammatory biomarkers associated with breast cancer risk in overweight or obese postmenopausal women.  This study will provide participants with a daily dose of 11g of plant based w3 fatty acids for 8 weeks in comparison to a control treatment (safflower oil, rich in LA, void of ALA).  Currently, dietary sources of w3 fatty acids are very limited in the Western diet, yet dietary sources of w6 fatty acids, known to promote inflammation are extremely abundant.  By investigating this novel source of w3 fatty acids, we hope to provide information regarding the health benefits of this oil to support the growth of camelina in Montana as additional food source of w3 fatty acids.
