Biodiesel, Biolubricant, and BioKoal

Researchers Involved:

johnson
Dr. Duane Johnson

Project Description:

Biodiesel

Dr. Johnson has produced and evaluated camelina biodiesel in agronomic equipment and vehicles on the NWARC.  Camelina biodiesel has been further evaluated by commercial biodiesel manufacturers including Core IV, Wyoming Biodiesel, Peaks and Prairies, GNG.  Camelina biodiesel performance is indistinguishable from other biodiesels.

Biolubricant

Dr. Johnson is developing biolubricants (crankcase, hydraulic, chain) that utilize camelina oil.  Two undergraduate student researchers at MSU are working with Dr. Johnson to develop wax esters from camelina oil.  These wax esters will replace more expensive and less available Jojoba waxes in a range of industrial and cosmetic products.

BioKoal

Dr. Johnson is working with Wyoming Biodiesel to manufacture composite coal pellets (Bio-KoalTM).  These pellets are composed of 70% coal residue and 30% camelina oil.  The Bio-Koal pellets contain approximately 10,400 BTU/pound, whereas, the original coal contained 8,400 BTU/pound.  The BioKoal has reduced emissions relative to 100% coal and can be utilized in any coal-burning generator.
