Finishing Beef on Diets Containing Camelina sativa Meal |
Project Description: |
| The beef study was completed in August of 2006. Cattle were fed diets containing 3.5% soy meal, 7% soy meal, 3.5% camelina meal or 7% camelina meal. No differences in weight gain or feed efficiency were observed (Fig. 10). No detrimental effects on health were reported throughout the feed study or at harvest. The cattle were slaughtered in Colorado. Fatty acid profiles from the blood showed elevated levels of omega-3 fatty acid and reduced omega6:omega3 ratios (Fig 11). The omega6:omega3 ratio of the soy fed beef was ~12. The ratio of omega6:omega3 in the blood of camelina-fed cattle was 7. The target ratio is 5. The fatty acid profiles of the muscle and fat tissue will be completed in winter 2007. |
