Project Description:

Camelina meal was first evaluated for production of omega-3 dairy in 2005.  At the time, we only had a limited supply of meal, so we chose to work with a dairy goat operation near Belgrade.  Dairy goats eat substantially less than dairy cattle. The goats were fed diets containing 15% camelina for 4 weeks.  The milk was collected and analyzed for omega-3 content.  The content of omega-3 in the milk increases with increasing camelina content in the feed content (Fig. 12).  Importantly, the ratio of saturated fatty acids (healthy) to unsaturated fatty acids (unhealthy) increases in milk from goats fed camelina meal (Fig. 13).  Camelina also has positive impacts on health, coat, and milk volume.
