Development of Irrigated Soybean for Production in South Central Montana |
Project Description: |
| There is renewed interest in using whole soybeans (WSB) as a partial or whole replacement for protein supplements in dairy and beef cattle rations and, more recently, fermented whole raw soybeans as a substitute for fish-based protein supplements used in commercial aquaculture rations. Dr. Kephart is evaluating soybean cultivars for production in Montana including determination of yield, oil and protein content as well as general agronomic adaptation of soybean cultivars representing a range of the earlier maturing genotypes. Additional studies will continue to refine seeding date, seeding rate, inoculation, and irrigation recommendations, and quantify any benefits to other crops grown in rotation with soybean. A legume species, soybean production in south central Montana will likely provide benefits to rotation crops similar to those observed with inclusion of cool season annual legumes in crop rotations. |
