Project Description: |
Biosafety of genetically engineered crops is a significant issue and is tied closely to recent technologies being developed at MSU. Research is being conducted and researchers are being informed of new developments in biotechnology regulation.
Dr. Peterson has completed a comprehensive research project examining risks posed by several plant-based pharmaceuticals currently being experimentally or commercially produced. This technology can provide numerous biobased business opportunities for Montana. Many plant-based pharmaceuticals will be produced in crops in field environments. Montana is an attractive location for production of high-value pharmaceutical crops because of the ability to grow and irrigate these crops in isolation within the state. Montana also could be a leader in laboratory based plant-cell propagation of therapeutic proteins in which in-field production in whole plants is not required or desired. Finally, Montana could be a leader in the high-value purification processing of pharmaceutical proteins.
