Bobcat 4x4: An intensive new summer school format
The 16-day summer course schedule will be intensive – classes will meet four times a week for four weeks, with each class day covering a week's worth of material
- 1 credit = 10 hours/week of class time and studying
- 6-credit maximum per 4-week session
Given the intensive schedule, students should plan to take no more than one class in a Bobcat 4x4 session without advisor approval.
There are 4 sessions offered this summer:
May Start: May 13 - June 7
June Start: June 10 - July 5
July Start: July 8 - August 2
Late Summer Session: July 22 - August 16
Dates and deadlines for registering, adding/dropping, withdrawals and refunds will vary based on session. Deadlines for add/drop are below.
Students on academic probation or returning from suspension may not be best served by taking summer classes, especially in the four-week format.
Banner organizes summer as one semester. Therefore, when students are hoping to take several courses in the summer, if one course is a prerequisite for another course the student will only be able to register for the prerequisite course.
Students should register themselves for the prerequisite course and then connect with the department offering the remaining courses to be registered. For example, if a student hopes to complete both M121Q and M161Q in the summer the student will only be able to register for M121Q themselves.
If students do not pass or complete a prerequisite course, they are responsible for dropping the sequential course themselves as soon as they know they are not going to be eligible. For example, if a student does not successfully complete M 121Q, they must drop any subsequent course for which M 121Q is a prerequisite.
If students are registering for summer courses that serve as the prerequisite for a fall course, the student must register for their summer course(s) first.
Academic Standing, GPA, Grade Requirements
Students on any form of academic probation or in need of a high grade in a critical course should fully consider their ability to succeed. Bobcat 4x4 courses will have demanding schedules and intense workloads within short timespans.
Summer Registration Access
Continuing MSU students may register for summer courses when they register for fall courses.
New, transfer and summer-only students cannot register until they have been accepted to MSU and completed an advising appointment.
New and transfer students should meet with an advisor in their department. Summer-only students should work with the University Studies Academic Advising Center.
Many online classes and a few face-to-face summer classes will follow MSU's previous summer format of six-week sessions.
First 6-Week Session: May 13 - June 21
Second 6-Week Session: June 24 - August 2
12-Week Session: May 13 - August 2
Some classes with unique needs might span longer time frames, as indicated in the Schedule of Classes found through MyInfo.
