Strand Union Building (SUB)
Handicapped access at the west door
Many people think of the SUB as the living room or the hearthstone of the campus. The building was named for
A.L. Strand, the first MSU alumnus to become president, 1937-42. Its uses are as varied as the people who
gather here. The MSU Bookstore, Exit Gallery, KGLT radio, Main Stage Theater, numerous eateries, meeting
rooms, conference services, and offices for student government, student activities and special support programs
are all under this roof.
Student fees paid for construction in 1940. Note the old MSC (Montana State College) symbol above the north
door. Student fees still maintain the building which has been expanded several times over the years.
All lounge areas, galleries, the bookstore and eateries are open to campus visitors. Of particular design interest is
the Leigh Lounge named for the SUB's first director, Mildred Leigh.
The Strand Union is building 53 on our campus map.
