Top Ten Strategies for Job & Internship Searching
10. Use an on-line portal

9. Answer an ad: either on-line or in print.  Covers ~ 15 – 30 % of available jobs
8. Go to targeted employer web pages and apply on-line.  (follow directions carefully)
7. Call Chambers of Commerce in your chosen city (might cost money)
6. Use Career Search to identify employers in your field

  • Go to Career, Internship & Student Employment Services for more information
5. Use a public or private employment agency

  • Job Services listings are generally on-line, through individual state, and often entry level with lower educational requirements
  • Private agencies:  be sure to check the fine print on contract and investigate agency with Better Business Bureau if you are uncomfortable with service
4. Do an internship (frequently still an option after graduation, depending on employer requirements) or volunteer in your field to gain experience.

  • Employers look for recent grads with internship experience
3. Informational Interview – you find someone in your preferred field in position similar to what you want to be doing, ask the questions that identify skills and education needed.  Ask for names of two or three others to contact.
2. Network:  use your contacts and those extended to you in informational interviewing

  • Contact an MSU alum (check with Career Services for help with this)
  • Ask your advisor and other key faculty in your field
  • Speak with recruiters from Career Fairs
  • Request assistance from immediate family, friends, other relatives, and acquaintances – find out who they know that you should know
  • Get in touch with people in the workplace where you did an internship
  • Look up former employers
  • Seek advice from professional acquaintances
1. Use resources in Career, Internship & Student Employment Services

  • Career Peers will happily assist you with your search
  • Numerous position listings in office
  • Registration benefits include resume drops, interview schedules, and e-mail notification of upcoming events that match your qualifications
