As a program of Montana State University Extension, Montana 4-H is part of the nationwide Extension network that links research-based knowledge and technology to people where they live and work. It combines federal, state and local expertise and resources.

The main learning style of 4-H is "learn by doing." Members and leaders participate in projects that fit with their own interests. 4-H also includes school enrichment programs, camps and special interest clubs.
