ADVISING

The Civil Engineering Peer Advising office is open  prior to advising and registration to help you make a plan in your DegreeWorks.  Trained peers advisers are available to help you create your plan based on your academic goals and meet the curriculum requirements as prescribed by the catalog.  Please see the CEPA staff in Cobleigh 212 for assistance prior to meeting with your academic adviser.

THREE STEPS TO YOUR ADVISING AND SCHEDULE

  1. Meet with Civil Engineering Peer Advisers to create your plan and become familiar with the course scheduling tools.
  2. Meet with your Advisor (use on-line scheduler or email faculty for an appointment)
  3. Register (your date is in the Registration Time Table found under MYinfo)

Curriculum flow charts are available on this webpage.

Quick Reference Points for Students

REMINDER: Be sure to confirm your bill using MY INFO for Spring semester. Dates posted in the Spring 2016 schedule.

Degree Works is found under Myinfo in your Secure Area under Student Services.

    • Your advisor's name is shown on the Degree Works worksheet.
    • Meeting with your advisor is REQUIRED; registration PINS will not be issued without departmental advising.
    • Degree Works will allow you to track your progress through the curriculum to completion of your degree requirements.

Online registration* is available per the Registration Time Table which can be accessed online under Myinfo on the MSU homepage. *Registration dates are based on class standing and total number of earned (completed) credits.

IMPORTANT COURSE INFORMATION - CHANGES

ALERT: CHMY 141 and CHMY 143 will NOT require both a laboratory and a recitation, ONLY a laboratory beginning in Fall 2015. Two CRN’s (lecture & lab) will be required to register for either CHMY 141 or CHMY 143.

CHMY 121 has been requiring both a laboratory and recitation for a couple of years and will still require all three for Fall 2015. Three CRN’s (lecture, lab, recitation) will be required to register for CHMY 121.

COM 110US, Public Communication has gone through Common Course Numbering and will now be changed toCOMX 111US – Intro to Public Speaking

ECIV 309 – BUILDING INFORMATION SYSTEMS (BIM)
Has changed from a 2-credit course to a 3-credit course. The course will have two lectures per week plus a 2-hour laboratory per week.

SENIORS: The analytical professional elective is no longer required. Another professional elective can be taken in place of the analytical professional elective.

If you are under an earlier catalog (e.g. 2010-12 or 2012-14) and want to make this substitution, you will be required to write a memo to Dr. Stephens, CE Department Head, detailing why you would like to make the substitution and which course you would like to take in place of the analytical professional elective. Please do a good job writing this memo. Dr. Stephens will review the memo and determine whether or not to approve the request. Upon approval, Renee will make the exception in Degree Works.

  • CE AND CE/BREN ADVISERS & SENIORS
Some professional elective courses may conflict with ECIV 489 or ECIV 499 (Senior Design Capstone Courses) the last two hours of the 3-hour course. If this occurs, students may be able to schedule the course with the conflict. Anders Larsson has indicated if the conflict is with one of the last two hours of the course (NOT the FIRST HOUR), he could work around the conflict. Students wanting to register with this conflict should first notify Anders Larsson via email ([email protected]) to make sure he is OK with the conflict, then register for all the courses except the senior design course. Complete the following steps to register for Senior Design:
    • After you have registered for your courses online, you will then need to process a Drop/Add sheet to add ECIV 489 or ECIV 499.
    • I can sign as the instructor and as the adviser on the Drop/Add sheet. My office is 205 Cobleigh Hall.
    • After I have signed the Drop/Add sheet, you will then need to turn the Drop/Add sheet in to the Registrar’s Office in Montana Hall so that they will register you for ECIV 489 or ECIV 499 and override the conflict.

CHANGES IN THE 2014-15 CATALOG FOR CE & CE/BREN MAJORS:

  • EGEN 116 (1 cr.) has been replaced with DDSN 101 (2 cr.)
  • ECIV 202 is now 1 cr. Rather than 2 cr.

Discrepancies in these credits (e.g. a student took the course as a 1 credit and the catalog the student is under required 2 credits) need to be addressed.

If a student has not taken ECIV 202 (CE & CE/BREN) or ETCC 204 (CET) and is on the 2012-14 catalog, it would be best to have the student process a Change in Curriculum Form and move into the 2014-15 catalog. If the student stays in the 2012-14 catalog and takes ECIV 202 (CE & CE/BREN) or ETCC 204 (CET) for 1 credit, the 2nd credit with need to be covered with some type of writing credit. However, it may be that the student took EGEN 116 for 1 credit and moves to the 2014-15 catalog and it requires DDSN for 2 credits. The 2nd credit of DDSN 101 needs to be covered with some type of technical credit (e.g. an extra professional elective credit).

Degree Works (DW) will put EGEN 116 on the DW worksheet in place of DDSN 101 but knows that it is a credit short under the 2014-15 catalog and will automatically add an additional extra 1 credit to the total Professional Electives required. (e.g. for CE & CE/BREN, the total will show 16 credits, for CET the total will show as 8 credits.).

Important Tips

  • Students must complete all of the pre-professional block courses (watch for EGEN 201 and EGEN 203) with a grade of “C-“ or better before they can take any professional block courses.
  • Students are not allowed to proceed to the next Math course if a grade of C- or better is not received in the prerequisite Math course. The grade C- or better is required for any prerequisite course before continuing to the next course.

NEW MINOR OFFERED BY THE CIVIL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT:

LAND SURVEYING

This rigorous minor is designed to provide students with perspective and skills to pursue a successful career in surveying or a surveying related field. The focus is on courses related to surveying such as photogrammetry, the global positioning system, U.S. Public Land Survey System, legal principles of surveying, and project design in surveying. Enrollment in this minor is open to all engineering and non-engineering students.

A minor must be pursued concurrently with a bachelor’s degree. For more information on the Land Surveying minor, stop by the black rack outside the CE Office or visit the Civil Engineering Website at: http://www.coe.montana.edu/ce/
