Departmental Information |
The Thermal Biology Institute (TBI) at Montana State University conducts and promotes research and education focused on the biology and interrelated physical and chemical processes of geothermal environments in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. TBI is currently comprised of twelve faculty representing expertise in biochemistry, geochemistry, microbiology, virology, mycology, ecology, plant physiology, bioengineering, and environmental physics. TBI faculty have active and competitively-funded research programs, which support numerous undergraduate research scholars, graduate students, postdoctoral scientists, research technicians, and visiting scientists. TBI faculty have been extremely productive, and have utilized research funds to leverage additional support from a variety of competitive grant programs including NASA, NIH, and NSF. The long-term goal of TBI is to understand how organisms respond and adapt to unique physical and chemical features of geothermal environments. TBI scientists strive to further define the role of geothermal habitats in the evolutionary history of thermophilic organisms distributed among the many geothermal features in Yellowstone National Park. | ||||||||||||||
