Information
The Northern Agriculture Research Center (NARC), established in 1915, is one of seven, off-campus research centers in the Department of Research Centers administered by the Montana Agricultural Experiment Station/College of Agriculture at Montana State University. It is located in north central Montana, seven miles southwest of Havre (pop. 10,000). NARC consists of 2,000 deeded acres and 1,000 leased acres at headquarters with an additional 3,960 acres of grazing land located in the nearby Bears Paw Mountains. Current livestock research includes beef cattle breeding, feedlot nutrition, rangeland grazing behavior, and livestock pest management. Current crop research includes site-specific crop management, dryland cropping systems, cereal grains, forages, oilseeds, plant nutrition and crop pest management. The Center staff consists of three faculty scientists, three research associates, and eight permanent support personnel. Duties and
Responsibilities
Develop a field-oriented research program to investigate precision nutrient management practices utilizing remote sensing, GIS, GPS and other technologies to account for spatial variability in soil fertility and crop productivity across cropping systems relative to Montana and the Northern Great Plains. Research will have the objective of improving nutrient use efficiency, soil and water conservation, pest management and economic returns in these predominately smallgrain based cropping systems. The individual is expected to cooperate with other scientists, extension personnel, farmers, and related private industry, advisory and commodity groups to develop research priorities and assist in developing management recommendations. The individual must have excellent written and oral communication skills. Expectations for scholarship include publication in refereed journals, presentation at scientific and producer meetings, and development of extension-related materials. Opportunities exist to participate in graduate student education. In supporting these endeavors, the individual is expected to secure extramural funds from state, regional, and/or national sources.
 
Required
Qualifications
1.     Ph.D. in soil science, agronomy, crop science, or related field.
 
2. Experience in precision agriculture technology and practices.
 
3. Experience in remote sensing, GIS, and GPS technologies in the inventory and analysis of land resources and crop performance.
 
4. Experience in field plot research, data collection and data analysis.
 
5. Knowledge of soil fertility management and cereal cropping systems.
 
Preferred
Qualifications
1.     Experience in the application of experimental design principles in conducting research in spatially heterogeneous sites.
 
2. Experience in the application of statistical methods for evaluating spatially variable plant and soil data.
 
3. Experience in research of soil fertility management and cereal cropping systems.
 
4. Experience in working with interdisciplinary teams.
 
5. Experience in obtaining extramural funding.
