Departmental
Information
The Department of History and Philosophy is committed to excellent, outstanding research, and service to our local and state community. It offers undergraduates five major options in history and two in philosophy, as well as a variety of teaching and non-teaching minors. Among the history options is a relatively new one in religious studies. In the heart of Yellowstone country, the Department especially facilitates student exploration of the American west, U.S. history, environmental history, and the history of science and technology. The Department also provides a gateway to areas beyond Yellowstone country, with courses of advanced study related to South Asia, East Asia, Latin America, Europe, colonial North America, and the ancient world. Internships at historical societies, museums, and Yellowstone are also an important part of the educational experience. The Department contributes to the University Core curriculum by offering popular courses in Contemporary Issues in Science, Humanities, Diversity, and Research and Creative Experience. Graduate students can pursue innovative MA and PhD degrees in the history of science and technology, environmental history, and the history of Montana and the American west. At all levels of the curriculum, the Department provides students with the tools to think rigorously, to research and thereby generate knowledge empirically, and to articulate their thoughts coherently. Montana State University is a comprehensive land-grant university, recognized by the Carnegie Foundation as a Tier 1 research university. MSU has an enrollment of approximately 12,000 and more than 2,500 employees on its main (Bozeman) campus. The University's flagship campus is located in the beautiful Gallatin Valley, 90 miles north of Yellowstone National Park. Bozeman, and its surrounding community of about 70,000, enjoy several outdoor recreation activities that include world-class downhill and cross-country skiing, fishing, backpacking, camping, and wildlife watching. Bozeman provides excellent schools and medical services comparable to those found in much larger communities, as well as a unique combination of culture, excellent restaurants, and small-town charm. The Bozeman area is well served by four major airlines.
