Information
Montana State University (MSU) is Montana's Land Grant University with total enrollment of 11,500 students, including 1,300 graduate students. Research expenditures currently exceed $100 million per year and have been growing steadily. The College of Agriculture has led the campus in research expenditures the last two years. The University is located in Bozeman, a community of 37,000; including Bozeman, the surrounding area has a population of over 70,000. Bozeman is known for its outstanding K-12 school system. The campus is 90 miles north of Yellowstone National Park and the area has numerous opportunities for outdoor recreation, and cultural activities. The Montana Agricultural Experiment Station (MAES) was established in 1893, in accordance with the provisions of the Hatch Act of 1887, to improve the production, marketing and use of Montana s agricultural and natural resources through research and outreach. MAES has personnel and facilities located strategically throughout Montana in support of this contemporary mission. The Animal and Range Sciences Department is part of MSU's College of Agriculture and is comprised of 18 research, teaching, and Extension faculty, 210 undergraduates, and 20 M.S. and Ph.D. graduate students. Our department will move into a new 40,000 square foot, state-of-the-art research and teaching facility in 2010. Additional information about the Department is at www.animalrange.montana.edu. Agriculture is the largest industry in Montana, and livestock, with over $1.2 billion in cash receipts, is agriculture's largest sector. Beef cattle are the primary livestock species in Montana (ranked 7th in the U.S.), but Montana also produces dairy, swine, and sheep.

 
Duties and
Responsibilities
This is an academic year (nine month) tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level in the Department of Animal and Range Sciences at Montana State University. The appointment will be 72% Research, 18%% Teaching, and 10% Service/Outreach funded by the Montana Agricultural Experiment Station and the College of Agriculture. The incumbent will develop high quality, effective research and teaching programs in beef cattle physiology, emphasizing metabolic processes. This position will require close working relationships with faculty in the Department, the College, other departments on the MSU campus, and other Land Grant Universities, and with commodity associations.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop a competitive research program focused on beef cattle physiology, with an emphasis on metabolic systems and interactions at the molecular and organismal levels, e.g., reproduction, genetics, nutrition, carcass quality, and behavior. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to undergraduate and graduate courses, mentor undergraduate and graduate students, and participate in outreach activities. The successful candidate will be required to publish in refereed journals, meet demands of teaching and advising, and provide appropriate public, department and university service.

Cooperative research within the Department and with the USDA ARS (Miles City, Montana) will be strongly encouraged. Teaching expectations will include primary responsibility for a junior-senior-level course, shared responsibility for other departmental undergraduate courses, and one graduate course in the candidates area of expertise (alternate year).
