Executive Education for Business Professionals
The Montana State University Management Institute, developed in 2008 by the College of Business, held three successful seminars for local business executives during the past two years. The first seminar, Finance and Accounting for Managerial Decision Making, was held April 10-11, 2008 and led by COB faculty Gary Caton and Priscilla Wisner. Managing Change at Work: A Practical Guide to Removing Barriers and Creating Buy-In, the was held on September 25, 2008 and led by COB faculty Laura Black and Interim Dean Dan Moshavi. The third seminar, Excel In Hard Times: Strategies for Developing and Managing Your Brand, was held on April 24, 2009 and led by COB faculty Rich Semenik.
Most MSU Management Institute learning opportunities are appropriate for professionals in all business fields and are designed to deliver a big-picture overview along with applicable, relevant action items. Content is designed for CEO’s, entrepreneurs, and current and aspiring managers from organizations of all sizes.

Course Description: Market leaders create powerful brands that are distinctive, focused and memorable. Good brands also signal superior value to customers. This session will focus on strategies to both develop and then manage your brand for maximum market impact during these tough economic times. Whether you feel you have a well developed brand image that needs some updating, need to start over with your branding strategy, or are starting from scratch with the branding effort, this session will guide you through the process of insuring your brand will be a powerful competitive tool.
During this seminar you will:
- Assess the "look and feel" of your brand
- Assess the competitive positioning power of your brand
- Determine the need to adjust/change brand components - name, logo, slogan
- Evaluate corporate versus product-line brand strategies
- Develop strategies to use the brand as an icon of your organization's mission and vision
- Coordinate organizational strategy with the "brand promise"
- Use the brand to forge and strengthen organizational relationships

Rich
Semenik is Professor of Marketing and formerly Dean of the College of Business at Montana State University-Bozeman (2000-2008).
He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan
in 1970, an M.B.A from Michigan State University in 1971, and his
Ph.D. from The Ohio State University in Marketing in 1976. Dr. Semenik
has published over 50 articles and 11 books on marketing and advertising
topics. His most recent co-authored book, Advertising and Integrated
Brand Promotion, 5th Edition is one of the leading advertising
books in the world and has been adopted at 500 universities in the
U.S., Canada, Australia, and Europe.
Professor Semenik
teaches courses in marketing research and introductory marketing and promotion. He consults with both small organizations and multinational corporations. He has provided services for IBM, SFX Entertainment, Ethos Marketing Research, FreeChart.com, Premier Resorts, Harris & Love Advertising, the Van Gogh Museum (Amsterdam), the Breakers Resort, and InfoGears, PrintingForLess.com, and Ligocyte Pharmaceuticals in Montana.
Dr. Semenik
was the founding Director of the College's Center for Entrepreneurship for the New West, ranked as one of the Top 10 Entrepreneurship Emphasis Programs in the United States in 2004 and 2005 by Entrepreneur Magazine. He co-founded the Bridger Private Capital Angel Investor Network in Montana in 2002. He currently serves as Director of the College of Business Management Institute Executive Education Series. |
Managing Change at Work: A Practical Guide to Removing Barriers and Creating Buy-In

Course Description: Coping with change in the workplace is never easy and can often lead to difficulties between co-workers, department managers and other business constituents. During this session, participants will learn ways to effectively manage change at work, and equip themselves with strategies designed to improve employee interactions and encourage buy-in. Participants develop these important skills while networking with and learning from MSU College of Business faculty and fellow business professionals.
Join MSU College of Business faculty Laura Black and Interim Dean Dan Moshavi for an innovative blend of practical experience and hands-on, interactive demonstrations to help manage change in the workplace.
This day-long seminar will help participants:
- identify barriers to change and develop strategies to remove those barriers
- effectively facilitate employee interactions and improve collaborations within and across departments
- examine ways to encourage acceptance and buy-in when addressing change in the workplace
This program is appropriate for mid- to upper-level managers who are managing change and employees of all levels who are experiencing change.

Laura Black received her Ph.D. from the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. As an assistant professor in the College of Business at Montana State University, Dr. Black brings internal and external consulting experience as well as research focused on collaborative practices, particularly in the context of new product development and entrepreneurship. |

Dan Moshavi received his Ph.D. in management and organizational studies from the University of Oregon. In addition to his teaching, research and service initiatives with the College of Business at Montana State University, Dr. Moshavi spent ten years in industry, where he provided management and human resources consulting in the areas of top leadership development and succession and assessment of training programs and other behavioral change initiatives to local, regional and national clients including Nike, Blue Cross/Blue Shield of MT, Murdoch’s Ranch and Home and Korman Marketing Group. Dr. Moshavi now serves the College of Business as the new Dean. |
Accounting and Finance for Managerial Decision Making (Encore Presentation)

Course Description: During these sessions, Gary Caton, Ph.D. and Priscilla Wisner, Ph.D. will lead participants through an examination of cost structure from a financial and operational viewpoint and help them apply that knowledge to business decisions. Participants will learn how these decisions can affect the performance of their business units and the profitability of their organizations. Our goal is to help participants improve their financial knowledge and better understand the impact their decisions have across their organizations—regardless of their particular decision-making area.
These sessions and the Thursday evening activities also provide an excellent opportunity to network with, and learn from, other Montana business professionals and MSU business faculty.

Gary Caton received his Ph.D. from the University of Oklahoma. Prior to joining the College of Business at Montana State University, Dr. Caton taught finance at Washington State University, Chapman University in California, and Otago University in New Zealand. Dr. Caton has taught finance at the undergraduate and graduate levels. His research interests lie in the field of financial management with special expertise in econometrics and applied microeconomics. He has presented his research at seminars, international conferences and universities in Canada, New Zealand and the United States. |

Priscilla Wisner earned her Ph.D. at the University of Tennessee, an MBA degree from Cornell University and a B.A. in International Economics from The George Washington University. Dr. Wisner spent six years with Citicorp in New York and has more than 15 years' experience consulting with corporations regarding financial systems implementation, process and product costing, and performance measurement systems. She has conducted classes in Latin America and Asia and has extensive executive education experience. |
