Motivate
To help motivate your student, make learning real and interesting; when they ask what math or reading has to do with life, let them know how essential those topics are by using real life examples from your experience. This could include being able to read and understand a job application or job description and then being able to fill out the application in legible hand-writing. Keep your students motivated in daily tutoring sessions by making the sessions as fun as you can and yet as productive as possible, completing tasks, and then sharing a story as a reward for a job well done.
Tutors, remember that students look up to you, and you are constantly being watched by other students as well as your own. So be mindful of your behavior. For instance, if you convey directly or indirectly that school is boring, then they will believe it is. Openly admit if you make a mistake, it lets them know that it is okay to make mistakes as well and you are modeling adult behavior of taking responsibility for your mistakes in acknowledging them.
Tutor's Responsibility
The tutor will act in a professional manor that best represents America Reads*America Counts, and themselves. Tutors will wear a name badge at all times within the Bozeman School System. If the tutor is sick, or in any other way unable to attend a session with a student, the tutor will inform the homeroom teacher as soon as possible about their absence.
We expect at least a one semester commitment out of our tutors. We try to make every effort to give the students in our program some stability with their tutors so that a trusting relationship can form and foster growth.
