America Reads*America Counts-Carissa Gates & Keaton Ramm
The America Reads Challenge began as a national initiative in 1997. In response to the alarming test scores of many 3rd grade readers, President Bill Clinton allocated extra work-study funds to any college or university that agreed to use at least half of those funds to pay students to tutor children in literacy skills. By 1999 the United States Department of Education expanded the America Reads Program to include math tutoring and so was born America Reads*America Counts. Today the MSU America Reads*America Counts program has the mission to work with and support area children to achieve and succeed academically. They serve between 250 – 350 children from pre K – High School per year and recruit, screen, train and place between 50 – 95 student tutors to work with area kids to achieve and succeed academically.
Bozeman Public School District #7 (BSD7) Math Mentor-Kristin Costle
BSD7 has identified underperforming elementary (grades 2-8) mathematics students as a population in need of academic support through mentoring. Current funding for Title I allows BSD7 to provide academic intervention support services in the area of reading, but is insufficient to provide necessary mathematics instruction support. This member will work to enhance instruction beyond the Title I funding to provide additional math instruction to students. The Math Mentors will work in the classrooms and individually with students who need extra attention in math. www.bsd7.org
