Into the Streets
Community Involvement Fair

A simple way for students to get involved at MSU and in the larger community is through the Into the Streets Community Involvement Fair held at the beginning of the fall semester. This is when an array of community service organizations visit campus with opportunities for all interested students. From building houses or assisting in grade schools, to teaching swimming or building local trails, you have a full menu of options from which to choose. There are part-day and full-day projects so you can savor the opportunity and still have time for school work and other extracurricular activates. There are ongoing opportunities to serve with these organizations as a volunteer, in an internship position, or as a paid work-study staff person as well.

Program Structure

Into the Streets is organized by the Office for Community Involvement and is a two day event. The office will provide each participation organization with table space, up to two chairs, and one campus parking permit per day Non-profits and other organizations looking for volunteer help should contact us for information on how to participate in our next fair.

The fair is typically held outside on the Centennial Mall in the center of the Montana State University Campus. In the event of inclement weather the event will be moved into the Strand Union Building.

History

When the Office for Community Involvement was created in 1993, one of the first efforts made by students to connect with the community was through the creation and maintenance of ongoing relationships between the OCI staff and a group of motivated community-based organizations. The Into The Streets (ITS) Volunteer Fair was born! The first ITS Fair was hosted on the MSU-Bozeman campus in 1993 when a group of BUS 101 Students took on the idea. The OCI staff invites a group of non-profit and school representatives to come to campus over two days and meet face-to-face with students, faculty and staff. The idea is to give the agencies a visible forum on campus to educate us all about their programs and their needs. This also gives them the opportunity to directly solicit student volunteers to help meet those needs. Into the Streets is a national initiative that was adopted by our campus and has become one of OCI’s trademark events each year.

The Fair Now

Today, the event is called the Into The Streets Community Involvement Fair, and we ask organizations to not only bring information on extracurricular volunteer opportunities, but also bring along information on possible internships and work-study jobs (please note that work-study students working with your organization may also be eligible to complete a Campus Corps Service Scholarship) so that students can explore a variety of ways in which they can engage in community work. The event is held generally over two days from 10am to 2pm each day. Please contact The Office for Community Involvement to get involved.
