We all want your child to reach their full potential, and with the three sided approach of parent, teacher, and tutor we hope to see significant improvement this academic year.
You as the parent have the greatest ability to affect your child’s academic success. Go over their homework with them, support their successes, and make sure they get a good night’s sleep.
Motivate
Parents can help motivate their students by minimizing “bummer” words like “won’t,” “never,” “no,” and “if.” Instead stress expressions like “I can,” and “I will.” One way to express motivation is through an interest of the child’s. For example, if a child loves basketball, make a cutout of a basketball and on it write. “It’s in your court now.” Place the ball in a neutral area for two weeks (this means that the parent and student will work together to stay on track with school). After a few weeks, put the ball in the student’s room, indicating that the student is responsible for their success in school. The student can “pass” the ball back to the parent when they need help. If the student does this, make sure to understand the child’s needs and respond to them promptly. Once you both have worked to find a solution, “pass” the ball back to the student. This becomes a fun, visual, and practical way to enhance the role of learning.
