What is a Site Leader?
An MSU BreaksAway Site Leader is a little bit of everything. They are a facilitator, leader, record-keeper, follower, van driver, accountant, an alarm clock, educator, confidant, supervisor, and a friend. A Site Leader oversees the entire break experience, from educating the participants, handling daily logistics, and managing conflict within the group. There are typically two site leaders per trip.

What are some of the responsibilities of a Site Leader?
- Attend all of the Site Leader training sessions.
- Organize, and co-lead 3 pre-trip planning meetings with trip participants and participate in a pre-trip challenge course experience with the group.
- Work cooperatively with the co-leader to consistently address the needs and safety of the group throughout.
- Help finalize and confirm logistics concerning group housing and food budgeting before and during trip.
- Take responsibility to handle all emergencies that may arise while on the trip.
- Agree to enforce all MSU policies for student travel plus MSU BreaksAway Alcohol/Drug policy (reminder: these are substance free trips!).
- Responsible to lead a daily reflection session with the group and fill out the daily impact report completely and thoroughly during the MSU BreaksAway trip.
How much time is involved in being a Site Leader?
Expect to contribute about 15-20 hours for meetings, logistics and fundraising. Time involved will increase as the trips draw nearer.
How do I become a leader?
Fill out the Site Leader Application and return to the OCI by the set date. The OCI will review your application and set up an interview with you.
Can I be a leader even if I have never participated in the past?
Yes! No previous BreaksAway experience is necessary, just a willingness to learn and be involved!
