Block Grant Program

College of Nursing Block Grant Program

Program Purpose

The Block Grant Program is administered by CONORS. It provides small grants to encourage faculty research.

Funds are awarded primarily:

  • To faculty launching their research
  • For pilot work
  • For testing protocols and measurement instruments

The intent of the program is to support faculty ideas that have the potential to grow into rigorous, high quality, sustained programs of research. It is expected that proposal will focus on a significant, yet manageable, research question and include appropriate research and analytical methods. New or junior investigators (those without prior external research funding) are required to identify and work with a senior faculty mentor to develop and/or conduct the project. Funds will not be awarded to help defray the costs of conducting a dissertation or thesis.

Call for Proposals

FALL SUBMISSION DEADLINES:
Call for proposals: Sept. 1
Deadline for submissions: Oct. 15
Notification of Awards: made by Dec. 20
Funding starts January 1 and is for one year

Awards

Awards are up to $5,000 (the actual funding is determined and approved by the Associate Dean).  Funds not spent revert back to the Block Grant Program. Requests for a one year extension can be made in writing to the Associate Dean.

Review Process

The CONORS Advisory Board identifies two potential reviewers for each application who will provide a scientific critique of the proposals. The CONORS Advisory Board considers the critiques and makes recommendations for funding to the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Education.

Grant Recipient Responsibility

Faculty members who are awarded a CON Block Grant agree to:

  • Conduct the proposed research with scientific integrity.
  • Keep the project on the time line provided in the application.
  • Work with CONORS to track expenditures.
  • Present at CON Research Day – one (or both) of the following:

  • Submit a final written report to the Associate Dean (within 60 days of the grant ending date).  The report should include:
    • How the research aims were accomplished.
    • Major findings of the study.
    • Any problems or limitations that were incurred during the research process.
    • Specific plans for obtaining extramural funding.
    • Financial report.
    • Submit a manuscript for publication (provide copy to the Associate Dean).
    • Apply for extramural funding within 1 year of the end date of the grant (provide copy to the Associate Dean).
