April 29, 2004 -- by MSU News Service
John Carlsten and Joseph Shaw
John Carlsten, Montana State University physics professor, and Joseph Shaw, MSU electrical and computer engineering professor, were each elected Fellow of the Optical Society of America. This is the highest honor in the organization and represents national and international prominence in the field of optics. They are the first Montanans to receive the recognition. Carlsten was recognized for fundamental studies of stimulated raman scattering, including soliton formation, quantum noise and continuous wave raman lasing. Shaw was recognized for leadership in optical remote sensing of the environment and promotion of broad appreciation of natural optics.
