Montana Watercourse joins Water Center organization

July 20, 2005 -- From MSU News Service
The Montana Watercourse and Montana Water Center are now part of the same organization. The Watercourse joined the Water Center operation on July 1, although the two will remain physically apart on the Montana State University campus.

The Montana Watercourse is located in Culbertson Hall. The Montana Water Center is located in the Huffman Building.

The Water Center is one of 54 university-based institutes established in 1964 through an Act of Congress. The center has focused on water resources research and continuing education for working water professionals in Montana. In recent years, it has been best known for operating the Whirling Disease Initiative and the Technical Assistance Center for Small Water Systems.

The Montana Watercourse provides public information, education, and support to educators, communities, local organizations and individuals so they can understand and wisely use water resources throughout the state. The Watercourse is the only state-wide water resources program that serves all water users. Watercourse officials said they will continue their 16-year tradition of providing information on water resource topics ranging from basic science to water rights and wetlands.

"Both organizations look on the move as strengthening our programs by improving the collaboration among researchers and the users of water information," said Karen Filipovich, director of the Montana Watercourse. "It will help the people of Montana by further bolstering the relevance of water investigation to everyday life and decisions."

Gretchen Rupp, director of the Water Center, said, "This combination of forces will enhance the connection between university system water research and the interests and needs of Montana's citizens."
