MSU engineering professor wins career award

March 23, 2006 -- from MSU News Service
Bozeman - Montana State University engineering professor Steven Shaw has received a $400,000 Career Award from the National Science Foundation (NSF). Spread over five years, the grant is one of NSF's most prestigious awards. The award supports early career development of professors who are integrating research and education.

Shaw plans to use the funding to provide undergraduate students with a cross-disciplinary lab for the undergraduate controls class required in electrical engineering.

Students in this lab will gain a better understanding of how to apply controls theory in a variety of cutting-edge technical areas, including fuel cells and energy, optics, and micro-electromechanical devices.

The funding will also support graduate students conducting research on how fuel cell degradation is related to transient electrical loads. Shaw's ultimate goal for this project is to discover how fuel cells might help solve future energy challenges.
