College of Letters and Science names Distinguished Professors

BOZEMAN -- A statistician, anthropologist, physicist and microbiologist have been appointed the first Distinguished Professors in the College of Letters and Science at Montana State University.
John Borkowski, mathematical sciences; Larry Carucci, anthropology; Rufus Cone, physics; and Al Jesaitis, microbiology, each received $4,000 and will give a public lecture during the current academic year, said George Tuthill, dean of the college. The appointments last three years.
The professors were nominated by their department heads and chosen for their contributions to the college, MSU and the scholarly community at large, Tuthill said.
Borkowski has analyzed and interpreted data for Yellowstone National Park, providing insights into issues of national importance like the effects of winter recreation on wildlife. He has made significant contributions in the areas of response surface methodology, design construction and assessment.
Carucci became MSU's first cultural anthropologist in 1985. He is internationally recognized for his research on Micronesia and the Pacific Islands. He is the world's foremost expert on Marshall Islanders.
Cone is internationally-known in the field of laser optics and materials. In his 32 years at MSU, he has received numerous awards, held visiting positions around the world and attracted grant support from state, national and international sources. He holds three patents based on his work at MSU.
Jesaitis was head of MSU's microbiology department from 1992 to 1998. His research on the human neutrophil has contributed significantly to the treatment of inflammatory diseases.
