Montana researchers receive money for water studies

January 09, 2007 -- From MSU News Service
BOZEMAN -- Five research teams and five graduate students who study water in Montana were recently awarded a total of $56,000 for projects beginning this year. They will research things like bull trout in Glacier National Park, snowmelt in an experimental forest and heavy metal at an abandoned mine.

The Montana University System Water Center, based at Montana State University in Bozeman, awarded the grants and fellowships to researchers and grad students at MSU, the University of Montana and Montana Tech. The grants totaled $45,600, and the fellowships $10,400. Both were funded through the federal Water Resources Research Act,

Grant recipients, their institutions and projects are:

-- Lucy Marshall, MSU. Predictive modeling of snowmelt dynamics: threshholds and the hydrologic regime of the Tenderfoot Creek Experimental Forest.

-- Clayton Marlow, MSU. Sediment and heavy metal source determination and reduction at a reclaimed abandoned mine site, Alta Mine in Jefferson County.

-- Steve Parker, Montana Tech. Identifying and characterizing sources of dissolved organic carbon in the Big Hole and Clark Fork Rivers.

-- Chris Gammons, Montana Tech. Temporal and spatial changes in the concentration and isotopic composition of nitrate in the upper Silver Bow Creek drainage.

-- Joel Harper, UM. Historical and future streamflow related to small mountain glaciers in the Glacier Park Region.

The student fellows, their schools and projects are:

-- Michael Meeuwig, MSU. He will continue investigating bull trout populations in Glacier National Park.

-- Eric Boyd, MSU. He will study natural mercury in aquatic environments.

-- Lisa Bithell Kirk, MSU. She will investigate microbial transformation of selenium in phosphate mine wastes.

-- Keri Petritz, Montana Tech. She will study biogeochemical controls of arsenic.

-- Magnus McCaffrey, UM. He will study the influence of beaver on brook trout invasion and cutthroat trout displacement.
