BOZEMAN -- A new guidebook for Montanans who monitor watersheds is now available through the Montana Watercourse of the Montana Water Center based at Montana State University.
The "Volunteer Water Monitoring Guidebook" covers basic water and watershed science, water monitoring design and methods, and data management and analysis.
The Montana Watercourse Volunteer Monitoring Program began in 1997 and has since provided education and training for hundreds of volunteers. The program helps Montanans gain the skills they need to gather accurate water quality information in local watersheds. The information they collect goes into the Montana Watercourse's Data Repository and then STORET, the Environmental Protection Agency's national storage and retrieval network.
"This data can be used by local groups to make informed decisions regarding their streams and rivers and can complement data sets collected by Montana state agencies," said Ted Sedell, water monitoring coordinator for Montana Watercourse.
To receive a copy of the guidebook or obtain training in water quality monitoring, contact the Montana Watercourse at (406) 994-6671 or visit its Web site at www.mtwatercourse.org The guidebook is free to those who take Volunteer Water Monitoring workshops. The guidebook costs $10 if obtained directly from Montana Watercourse.
