McDonald and Turner win MSU community involvement award

Tyrel McDonald of Geyser and Madeline Turner of Forsyth have received the Torlief Aasheim Community Involvement Award at Montana State University. They were honored for commitment to volunteerism and outstanding volunteers while in school.

The students received their awards during the 25th annual Chamber-MSU Awards for Excellence banquet on Feb. 13.

The MSU Alumni Association and the Bozeman Area Chamber of Commerce co-sponsored the Excellence Banquet. It was a night that feted the achievements of 42 of MSU's top senior students as well as the students' mentors.

McDonald is a senior majoring in agricultural business and minoring in animal science with a 3.8 grade point average. During his time at MSU, McDonald has been a member of Alpha Zeta agriculture honorary, FFA and 4-H. He has also been a traveling member of the Bobcat football team. McDonald has volunteered for the city of Geyser, elementary schools, several youth groups in Geyser, St. Jude's Bike-a-thon and with 4-H groups. He has traveled to Taiwan to see how other countries utilize grain and has interned in Washington, D.C. at the office of former Montana Sen. Conrad Burns. A President's List and Dean's List member, McDonald has also been inducted into the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society and the Golden Key International Honour Society. He is the son of Lennie and Amy McDonald of Geyser.

Turner is majoring in cell biology and neuroscience with a 4.0 GPA. During her time at MSU, Turner has been a biology lab student assistant and a member of Mortar Board and Septemviri, an honorary society recognizing outstanding seniors. She has also been active in welcoming others to campus as an MSU orientation leader, a member of Cat Crew, a volunteer for Catapalooza, First Year Experience and as a teacher of a seminar class for first-year students. Her community service activities include organizing a food drive on Thanksgiving, serving as a CAP mentor, helping organize a campus-wide clean-up, raising money for the Big Brother/Big Sisters Foundation of Gallatin County and volunteering at a nursing home. She is a member of the National American Cancer Society youth task force, Alpha Lambda Delta honorary, Alpha Epsilon Delta, Up 'till Dawn and MSU's Relay for Life committee. She has volunteered with a health team in Costa Rica and Panama and at an AIDS orphanage in Malawi. Turner is the daughter of Mark and Jan Turner of Forsyth.
