Two Montana State University seniors majoring in graphic design will work at prestigious magazines in New York City this summer as a result of winning top honors in a national contest.

Top finishes in the Society of Publication Designers Student Design Contest have earned Allison McLean of Billings a $2,500 cash prize and an internship at Marie Claire magazine and Beau Foor of Belgrade $500 plus an internship at Men's Health magazine.

McLean won first prize in the national contest for a four-page spread about rugby created for a sports magazine. Foor took third place for a four-page design depicting DJ master Armin Van Buren created for a popular music magazine.

The students will also receive complimentary housing to accompany the summer internships supplied by SPD. Both MSU graduating seniors entered the competition as part of a class project organized by Jeffrey Conger and Stephanie Newman, both MSU graphic design professors.

"While these two student winners directly receive awards and praise for their accomplishments, it is the entire graduating class of MSU Graphic Design students who also benefits when entering the job market," Conger said. "Through wide publication of these contest winners design firms, advertising firms, magazine and book publishers across the country will become aware of the excellence of the academic program at Montana State University making it possible for them to compete for the top jobs in the best markets."

Marie Claire is part of the Hearst Corporation media group, which also publishes Cosmopolitan, Harper's Bazaar and Esquire magazines. Men's Health, the largest men's lifestyle magazine with a worldwide readership of 18.5 million, is published by Rodale Inc., which also produces Bicycling, Mountain Bike and Runner's World magazines.
