MSU seniors from Bozeman, Billings win awards for academic excellence

April 27, 2007 -- MSU News Service
Montana State University seniors Christoffer Renner of Bozeman and Elise Hogenson of Billings received the Dean's Award for Academic Excellence at the annual Letters and Science awards ceremony held on April 26. Renner received the award for science and Hogenson for letters.

Renner, a student in the University Honors Program, will graduate with a double major in physics and mathematical science, as well as a minor in music. Renner was a recipient of the prestigious Goldwater Scholarship for undergraduate excellence in science and math. Renner's research at MSU has included work in MSU's Spectrum Lab studying optic waveforms, which have possible application in communications devices. Last summer he had an internship at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., working on a project that used light waves to beam communications to space probes and satellites. An accomplished pianist, Renner has also been active with the University Chorus, the Symphonic Band, the Christian Student Fellowship and Bozeman's Intermountain Opera. He is the son of Cliff and Debbie Renner of Bozeman.

Hogenson is majoring in economics. Also in the Honors Program, she will graduate with a 4.0 grade point average and hopes to pursue a doctorate in economics. She has completed two independent research projects, "Motherhood and the Wage Penalty," and a second on the relationship between maternal work choices and infant health. She has been an undergraduate teaching assistant for several courses, independently leading review sessions, holding office hours and grading assignments.
