Community members who want to learn the art, philosophy and history of fencing can sign up for a semester-long course at Montana State University beginning Aug. 27.
The course is offered through MSU's Extended University, so community members are welcome to audit the course. MSU students can enroll for undergraduate credit. Michael and Kirsten Holland, who have been teaching fencing at MSU for several years, said their class roster regularly includes members of the community.
The course is held Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:10 to 4:30, Aug. 27 through Dec. 5 in the SOB Barn at MSU. No previous fencing experience is required, and equipment is provided. The cost is $195 for 20 classes.
Holland said the course is appropriate for anyone, and encourages exploration of tactical advantages of all body types, as well as the development of strategy and mental flexibility.
For more information, contact Holland at mholland@montana.edu and to enroll, visit Extended University's Web site at http://eu.montana.edu/credit. The course is listed as HHD 100-50. Registration deadline is Aug. 20, though students are encouraged to register early due to limited class size.
