Montana 4-H honored for its international programs

November 27, 2007
The International Programs Committee of 4-H International has honored the Montana 4-H Center for Youth Development's international exchange programs for having outstanding quality.

Montana coordinator for international programs, Stephanie Davison, along with regional coordinators Linda Stewart of Big Fork, Lourina Dupuis of Polson, Beth Foster of Helena, Kathy Simpson of Moore, Barb Larsen of Galata, and Janet Loomis from Terry, were honored for high participation levels. Those communities had either a high number of students who went abroad or hosted a high number of youth. All of those programs also complied with standards set by the Council On Standards for International Educational Travel, which accredits such programs.

Montana was one of four states to receive this award, which was presented earlier this month in Lexington, Kentucky at the annual 4-H International Fall Coordinators' Conference.

This year, Montana families hosted delegates from 27 summer Japanese delegates, a Finnish delegate, and International 4-H Youth Exchange (IFYE) participants from Austria, Taiwan, England, Northern Ireland and Germany. IFYEs are older youth who are no longer 4-H members. In addition, Montana youth went to Japan, Australia, Finland, the United Kingdom and Germany/Austria. Also, there are two Japanese high school students in Montana for the whole year, one staying with a family in Galata and another staying with a family in Glasgow.
