Grandparents Raising Grandchildren support training program set in February

January 30, 2008
People with an interest in helping grandparents who are raising grandchildren have an opportunity to train as facilitators in February through the Montana Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Project sponsored by Montana State University Extension.

Trained facilitators go back to their communities to set up support groups that help not just grandparents, but any people who find themselves raising children who aren't their own, said Sandy Bailey, MSU Extension family and human development specialist. Facilitators often work with local Extension Service staff or other social service agencies to set up a program. They find a location, publicize meetings and coordinate the sessions.

The support group facilitator training will be help Feb. 26-27 at Bozeman's Comfort Inn. The training will include instruction on a parenting curriculum for kincare providers, family nutritional information and resources available from other organizations.

There already are 15 support groups for grandparents in Montana. However, more support groups are needed, Bailey said. Some groups are facilitated by volunteers, who are often grandparents themselves, and other groups are facilitated by local MSU Extension agents or staff from other organizations serving families.

The two-day training cost $80, though a limited number of scholarships are available. Participants are responsible for their own travel and lodging expenses.

For more information or to register for the training please contact the MSU Extension Family and Human Development office at 994-5099 or email grg@montana.edu.
