The Montana State ski team finished seventh at the 2008 NCAA Western Region Championships, Saturday afternoon at Bridger Bowl and Bohart Ranch.

Colorado won the team title with 555 points, followed by Utah 527, Denver 497, Alaska-Anchorage 458, New Mexico 445, Nevada 422, MSU 368, Western State 199 and Whitman 185.

MSU's top finish of the final day of competition belonged to Kaelin Kiesel, who placed tenth in the women's 15-kilometer classical event. Kiesel finished the course in 59:06.72. She was followed by Karoline Teien, 21st, and Melina Park, 28th.

Maria Grevsgaard of Colorado captured her second event of the regional, covering the course in 53.42.61.

In the men's Nordic event, Bernhard Roenning paced the Bobcats finishing 14th overall in 1:08.17. He was followed by Ryan Scott, 20th, 1:11.59; and Nathan Park, 23rd, 1:13.14.

MSU's hopes in the men's slalom event faltered as Toby LaMar was disqualified after missing a gate on his second run. LaMar was sitting in eighth place.

Don Brockett had Montana State's best showing, placing 17th with a two-run clocking of 1:49.48. He was followed by Kyle Taylor, 29th, and Andre Hokholt, 32nd.

In women's slalom action, the Bobcats were paced by Ali Leighton and Alyssa Cartmill, who placed 20th and 21st, respectively.

According to MSU head ski coach Dan Brelsford, the Bobcats have qualified six athletes for the NCAA Championships. Montana State will host the 2008 NCAA Skiing Championships, March 5-8.

In Nordic, Anders Folleraas, Gunnar Kristiansen, Claire Rennie, and Kaelin Kiesel look to have earned a spot in the championships, while Chichi Williams and Toby LaMar earned berths in alpine.

Andre Hokholt, who placed third in the giant slalom on Friday, narrowly missed the field and will be the first alternate.

The official notice of NCAA qualifiers will be announced on Monday.
