People in Education: Bruce McLeod to be honored

April 03, 2008
Bruce McLeod
Bruce McLeod, professor of electrical engineering and former dean of graduate studies at Montana State University, will be recognized for contributions to the development and operation of the Great Plains Interactive Distance Education Alliance (Great Plains IDEA) April 8 in Kansas City, Mo.

McLeod will be honored at the Second Annual Friend of Great Plains IDEA award luncheon. While dean of graduate studies at MSU, McLeod recognized that students needed programs which MSU was unable to offer independently. As part of Great Plains IDEA, McLeod and colleagues were instrumental in establishing processes that allowed the alliance to launch its shared degree programs.

The Great Plains IDEA was founded in 1994 by human sciences colleges in 11 states. It offers several shared, distance education degree programs at the graduate and undergraduate levels. Students can enroll in one institution and take online courses from any of the participating institutions. Students have access to faculty across the nation, and participating institutions can offer degree programs beyond what any one institution could offer alone.
