MSU's FCI program wins national award
April 09, 2008
MSU's Facilities Condition Inventory program has recently won the APPA Effective and Innovative Practices Award.
Jeff Butler, director of facilities, operations and management, and Robert Lashaway, associate vice president of university services, and other MSU employees created the Facility Condition Inventory (FCI) program and database in 1992. It was only this year that MSU entered it into the APPA competition.
FCI is an audit tool used to manage facilities operations, maintenance, and expansion across the MSU campus. The FCI program was adopted by most state agencies in the late 1990's as a means to identify and monitor the state's deferred maintenance liability. Most Recently the FCI program was adopted as the fundamental methodology for the state of Montana's 2007-2008 K-12 Facility Assessment of public schools. The K-12 assessment was designed to measure to what extent the physical condition of school facilities may impact the equity of education throughout the state.
"This is a wonderful recognition of the expertise of our dedicated staff, and the high level of stewardship we provide for this campus, despite our financial constraints," said Craig Roloff, vice president for administration and finance at MSU.
"In sharing the FCI program with the state, MSU continues its land grant heritage of outreach and public service to Montana," Roloff said.
A formal presentation of the award will be made during a July 9 reception in San Antonio. It will also be announced in Facilities Manager magazine.
With more than 1,500 educational institution members worldwide, APPA promotes excellence in the administration, planning, design, construction, maintenance, and operations of educational facilities. In addition, APPA serves the entire education community by conducting research, providing learning opportunities, producing publications, developing guidelines, and serving as a central information source on educational facilities issues.
