Greg Keeler, one of two recently named Letters & Science Distinguished Professors at Montana State University, will give his inaugural lecture at 5 p.m. Thursday, April 17, in Room 275 of the Strand Union Building on the MSU campus.
The MSU English professor, artist, entertainer and humorist will lecture on "Post-Western Blues: Songs, Poems and Prose." The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be followed by a reception hosted by the College of Letters and Science.
Keeler has taught in the MSU Department of English since 1975. He is a well-known writer who has published fiction, nonfiction, plays, songs and poetry. He received his master's degree from Oklahoma State University and his Ph.D. from Idaho State University. In 1998, Keeler won the Charles and Nora L. Wiley Award, the highest honor MSU bestows for research and creativity among faculty members, and in 2001 he received the Montana Governor's Award in the Humanities.
Keeler has published an array of books, including seven books of poetry, "Waltzing with the Captain," a biography of Richard Brautigan, a number of musical plays, and innumerable articles, essays, book chapters and songs. He teaches courses in American literature and Western American literature, and is highly sought for his upper-level creative writing courses.
John Miller, professor of neuroscience, joins Keeler as the second Distinguished Professor appointed in the 2007-2008 academic year. Paula Lutz, dean of the College of Letters and Science, said both Miller and Keeler were chosen in recognition of their contributions to the college, to MSU, and to the scholarly community at large.
